At some point in their lives, many people need comfort and guidance. Religion can provide a person with this. However, if there is no understanding within which religion a person can feel comfortable, the search can be delayed.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, you need to decide which type of religion is closer to you - monotheism or polytheism. The first includes all Christian movements, Islam, Judaism and other less well-known forms. The latter include Hinduism, Jainism, Shintoism and others. Buddhism, contrary to common stereotypes, belongs to polytheism, since it is based on the idea of god-devas.
Step 2
It is very important to pay sufficient attention to the basic teachings and aspects of the religion you are interested in. It is worth starting with reading the main books. As a rule, already the first pages of these books allow you to understand how this religious teaching correlates with your picture of the world. Most of the foundational books of mainstream religions have been translated into many languages, so getting familiar with the basics of the different teachings is now quite easy.
Step 3
Be sure to take the time to study the history of religions. For many people looking for a suitable religious system, it is important how believable the story is. If from the very beginning you cannot accept the foundations of a particular religious direction, considering the story of its origin to be fiction or stupidity, it is unlikely that you will be able to penetrate the essence of this religion.
Step 4
Study the basic commandments of the life of believers well. In many religions, they are similar, representing a list of prohibitions that regulate the normal life of society. However, there are many subtle differences and exceptions. Any commandments are given for strict observance, so they cannot be partially fulfilled. There are two global types of commandments. The first regulate the relationship between man and God, the second - the relationship between people. If the list of commandments of a particular religion causes you rejection or rejection, it may make sense for you to continue searching. It makes no sense to turn to religion in order to follow its rules contrary to your wishes.
Step 5
Having studied the essence of each religion, you can determine which one is closer to you. It is worth taking into account your personal experiences, perhaps you feel good in Orthodox churches, and Catholic churches are "pressing" on you, or vice versa. The religion you choose should feel like something close, while your worldview and the rules of life should not come into conflict with it.
