Peacemaker's Day is one of the most significant holidays in South Ossetia. Thanks to the peacekeeping forces that entered the Georgian-Ossetian conflict 20 years ago, thousands of lives have been saved, and peace has finally come to the country itself.
This holiday is celebrated every year on July 14 - it was on this day in 1992 that the peacekeeping forces stopped the three-year military operations of Georgia against South Ossetia. During the conflict, thousands of Ossetians were killed, and an even larger number were expelled from their homes.
The difficult political and economic situation in South Ossetia forced the peacekeeping forces of Russia and North Ossetia to act as a buffer between the warring parties, as a result of which the four countries signed the Agreement on the settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, taking on the obligations of peaceful existence.
Traditionally, the celebration of this event begins with the laying of wreaths at the site of the tragic death of Russian peacekeepers. On August 8, 2008, in the Upper City, they took upon themselves the entire blow of the Georgian troops, which violated the Sochi Agreement of 1992, their obligations and all norms of international law. Very often, as part of the celebration, various actions are held, the purpose of which is to help the families of the killed peacekeepers.
Also on July 14, a parade is held with the participation of representatives of the South Ossetian government, the administration of the President of the Republic and peacekeepers, demonstration performances and solemn meetings. On this day, the President of the country visits the families of the killed peacekeepers, expresses his gratitude to everyone who participated in the resolution of the difficult Georgian-Ossetian conflict, and reminds all residents of the significance of the Peacekeeper Day.
Residents of South Ossetia gather in the main squares of cities and centers of the Republic to take part in various cultural and entertainment events. And this holiday ends with a rally and a concert with the participation of national pop stars, which are held on the Theater Square in Tskhinvali.
