Mount Mithridat is one of the attractions of the city of Kerch, the height of the mountain reaches 92 meters, it can be seen from all points of the city. The mountain was named after the Pontic king Mithridates VI Eupator, and its capital, Panticapaeum, was located on its slopes. From his youth, this ancient king was afraid of poisoning, so he took a little bit of poison in order for his body to develop immunity. Mithridates was a powerful ruler and even fought with Rome. As a result of the third war, he was defeated by the troops of the commander Gnaeus Pompey. After the defeat, Mithridates returned to his capital, Panticapaeum, to gather strength and organize a new army. But his own son betrayed him, the army rebelled and the threat of captivity arose. Trying to avoid the shame of captivity, the king took poison, having previously killed the daughters who were with him, but the poison did not work. Then Mithridates asked his servant to kill himself with a sword. So Mithridates perished, and the mountain found its name.

Here you can see the ruins of the ancient Greek settlement of Panticapaeum, the capital of the Bosporus, the largest handicraft and trade center of the Northern Black Sea region in ancient times. Mount Mithridates, in addition to ancient legends, keeps monuments and more modern ones. The Obelisk of Glory to Immortal Heroes is located here. It is dedicated to generals and officers, sergeants and privates of the Separate Coastal Army and sailors of the Azov military flotilla, and to all the soldiers who died a heroic death for the liberation of the Crimea in November 1943 - April 1944. The obelisk was installed even before the end of the war, after the liberation of Kerch as a result of the Crimean offensive operation … This is the first monumental monument dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War. Since then, April 11 has been celebrated as the Kerch Liberation Day.
