Sitting cross-legged is a favorite position for a considerable number of girls. But how decent is it in terms of etiquette? Despite the fact that times are changing and the permissible norms are becoming softer, according to the rules of etiquette, it is not recommended for girls to cross their legs.
How is it supposed to sit
The norms of etiquette were finally formed around the 19th century, and have not changed much since then. The changes affected completely different things: it became unnecessary to comply with many norms in most places. However, if you are going somewhere where high society gathers, or just want to show yourself off the sidelines at a formal meeting or event, then it is helpful to follow etiquette.
The girl is supposed to sit with a straight back. You need to put your feet in front of you, keep your knees together. It is not allowed to tuck your legs under you, just like stretching them in front of you. Leaning over the back of a chair too much or half-collapsing on the couch is also considered not the most polite, this is allowed only for ladies in old age. Cross-legged has always been prohibited.
You can also tilt your closed knees slightly to the right or left. If the sofa or chair is so soft that it is difficult to sit directly on them, and the very shape of the seat suggests that you need to recline a little on it, then it is allowed to slightly stretch your legs forward.
Where can you sit cross-legged
In the modern world, one rarely has to attend receptions in the high society, and sitting correctly is required, for the most part, at business meetings. Since these are often tedious and exhausting activities, indulgences are permissible for them. It is allowed to lean on the back of the chair, but it is better to keep the back as straight as possible. You can't slouch. Sometimes it is allowed to cross legs, but only if the legs are beautiful and well-groomed. You shouldn't sit like this all the time.
In no case should you cross your legs if in this case the upper part of the thigh opens to the eyes of the interlocutor (this happens if you are not wearing a long enough skirt), underwear or the edges of stockings.
It is ugly to cross your feet in public transport or in the theater, in the cinema, as other passengers can get dirty on your shoes, and it becomes more difficult to walk past you.
In any case, a sitting position with legs wide apart is considered ugly for girls. Especially if you still bend forward and lean on your hands. This can be an indicator of bad manners.
It is considered normal to cross your legs if you are in the circle of confidants. If you are at home, then you can completely take any position.
Wherever you are, it is not recommended to sit cross-legged for a long time. Physiologically, this is a bad habit. This position leads to stagnation of blood, as the femoral veins and arteries are pinched. Veins stretch, which can lead to early varicose veins. In addition, some soft tissues in this position do not receive sufficient nutrition.
