There are many scientific disciplines that help to correctly understand the meaning of the basic truths of Christianity. The Bible can be studied in many ways. In addition to studying Holy Scripture, Christianity does not forget about the scientific approach to the works of the Holy Fathers of the Church.
Patorology is included in the corpus of disciplines studied in Theological Seminaries or religious institutions of higher learning. Patrology is the science of the creations of the holy fathers and teachers of the Church. The etymology of the word is quite simple - the ancient Greek word patros is translated as "father", and logos means "word". It turns out that the literal translation of patrology is "the word about the holy fathers."
Patrology studies the life, the main exploits of many prominent figures of the Church. In addition to holy people, the so-called teachers of the Church are included in the study of patrology. They can be people who are not canonized in Christianity, but are known for their important works on the doctrine of the Christian Church.
Otherwise, patrology can be called the history of ancient Christian writing. So, the creations of Christians of the first centuries are subject to research. In addition to the books of the New Testament, the Holy Tradition also includes several other works, the authorship of which is attributed to the holy apostles. One of these books is "Didachi" (The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles). Another ancient written source studied by patrologists is the epistles of the men of the apostles. The latter are known as the direct disciples of the holy apostles. The apostolic men are famous for their epistles to various Christian communities, as well as for their holy, pious life. Many of the apostolic men were martyred.
Patrology studies the literature of the Holy Fathers who lived after the first centuries of the formation of Christianity. So, the literature of those authors who were glorified in the ranks of the saints quite recently can be examined.
The main thing in the study of the works of the holy fathers and teachers of the Church is not only the interpretation of the meaning of the scriptures, but also the study of the prerequisites for writing a particular treatise.
