Every year on June 26 is the International Day against Drug Use and Illicit Trafficking. Each time the event is held under a certain auspices, for example, this year the action was held under the slogan “Closer to each other, further from drugs”.
For more than a hundred years, the fight against the use and distribution of narcotic substances has been waged all over the world. Already in February 1909, thirteen countries that took part in the work of the Shanghai Opium Commission tried to find ways to limit the traffic of narcotic substances from Asian countries. Russia was one of the members of the international commission. But even after more than a hundred years, the law enforcement agencies of all countries are still too far from a complete victory over the drug business.
According to statistics, more than 2.5 million people in Russia systematically use drugs. If we take into account all the intermittent drug users, the figure is twice that. Achievements include the fact that the number of drug addicts is not increasing, but at the same time it is not decreasing. Every second drug addict does not live up to the age of 30.
International Day Against Drug Use and Trafficking is an event that aims to create a drug-free society that will lead addicts and teach them to live drug-free.
On this day, large-scale events are held around the world. Actions, seminars, confidential conversations, explanatory work, recognition of drug addicts who have managed to find the strength in themselves and overcome the terrible addiction - this is what helps to draw public attention to the existing problem.
The observance of the world day against drugs was approved by the UN General Assembly in 1978. This day can hardly be called a holiday. The whole horror of the problem calls people to solidarity, teaches not to remain indifferent if someone nearby dies after taking another dose of the potion.
In higher, secondary and special educational institutions, lectures are held, to which medical specialists and former drug addicts are invited, ready to tell the whole truth about drug addiction.
Charity concerts of pop stars are held all over the world. All proceeds are sent to medical and rehabilitation centers, where drug addicts undergo treatment.
