Biography: early years

Evgeny Ivanovich Gusev was born on May 23, 1939 in Moscow. At school he showed interest in chemistry and biology. In adolescence, he became interested in medicine. Even then I decided that I would be a doctor.

As he grew older, the dream did not fade away. After leaving school, he successfully passed the entrance exams to the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N. I. Pirogov. He graduated from the university in 1962.

After the "pirogovka" Gusev was assigned to one of the regional hospitals in the Kaluga region. In it, he occupied the chair of the chief physician. An inexperienced new graduate of the medical institute was entrusted with this position due to a shortage of personnel. Despite his age, Gusev coped with the powers entrusted to him with dignity. He worked in the district hospital for two years.

Scientific career

In 1967, Eugene returned to the alma mater and became a graduate student of the Department of Neurology, Pediatric Faculty. Soon he defended his Ph. D. thesis. Gusev did not stop there and continued his research activities, but already at the medical faculty of the same university.

In 1973 he defended his doctoral dissertation. Two years later, he was awarded the title of professor. After that, Evgeny became the head of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the Russian State Medical University at his own institute, where he plunged into research activities. Soon, on his initiative, a neurosurgery course was opened at the department, and later - an advanced training course for neurologists and neurosurgeons. Many of Gusev's students now head similar departments in other medical universities, research laboratories and departments in hospitals.

Together with his students, Evgeny has done a colossal research work in the field of neurology and neurosurgery. He carried out complex studies of vascular pathology of the brain in practice and experiment. Thanks to this approach and an inquiring mind, Gusev did a lot of useful things for modern medicine. So, he formulated the concept of ischemic brain disease, developed fundamentally new provisions in the emergence of cerebrovascular accidents, established general patterns of changes in the functional state of the brain in acute blood flow disorders and chronic vascular insufficiency.

He improved approaches to treatment and rehabilitation at different stages of stroke. He paid special attention to this pathology. It was Gusev who proposed the criteria for early prediction of the course of stroke and came up with new forms of medical care for patients with similar diagnoses. So, he advised his practicing colleagues to pay great attention not only to neuroresuscitation measures, but also to preventive ones. With the active participation of Gusev, a neurological ambulance service was created in Russia, neuroresuscitation and neurovascular departments have been deployed in many hospitals.

Gusev also studied issues related to the therapy of ischemic stroke. The results of his research activities are reflected in the monographs:

  • "Intensive therapy for diseases of the nervous system";
  • "Vascular diseases of the brain";
  • "Coma".

Several monographs have been translated into English.

One of the world's first comprehensive studies of multiple sclerosis was carried out under his leadership. It made it possible to formulate a modern understanding of the mechanisms of the formation of this disease, improve the criteria for diagnosing pathology at early stages, and identify key approaches to effective treatment. Gusev paid special attention to the medical and social rehabilitation of people with this diagnosis. The results of his studies were presented by him in the monograph "Multiple Sclerosis".

Gusev also has textbooks for students of medical universities. He wrote them in collaboration with his colleagues and students:

  • "Nervous diseases";
  • "Neurology and Neurosurgery";
  • "Clinical Neurology".

In 1988, Eugene was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, and after the collapse of the Union - a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1989 he was appointed chairman of the board of the All-Russian Society of Neurologists. He soon became president of the National Stroke Association. In this role, Gusev contributes to the development of medical science in Russia, deepening its ties with fundamental disciplines, expanding and strengthening international contacts.

Thanks to such innovations, the publication quickly became one of the leaders in this specialty not only in the country, but also in the world. The journal is indexed in such well-known scientific and medical databases as Index Medicus and Current Contents.
