Ian was born in England, in the town of Blackburn, in 1942. Soon the family moved to Ermston, where the boy spent all his childhood. After the first success, the actor decided to try himself in Hollywood and went to America. But there he was received rather coldly and, apart from supporting roles, they did not offer anything for a long time.
Great success came to Ian after filming in the TV series Lovejoy, where he embodied on the screen the image of the main character - the charming con man Lovejoy, who fell in love with the public all over the world. Another series that won the actor a Golden Globe for Best Actor was Deadwood. Ian's first wife is actress Susan Farmer. They met on the set of Wild and Thirsty. Their marriage only lasted three years.
