The USSR was rightfully considered the most reading country in the world. Unfortunately, his successor, Russia, cannot boast of this. Scientists, teachers, parents sound the alarm: children read very little. If earlier, even in the most modest apartment or house, there were necessarily at least a few bookshelves, now it is not uncommon for a luxurious cottage to be literally crammed with chic headsets, the most expensive household appliances and there are almost no books in it. Why?

Some people argue that the general decline of morals that occurred after the so-called "perestroika" is to blame. Like, all the prohibitions have collapsed, and they were replaced by blatant vulgarity. Instead of good literature calling for good, children began to slip almost blatant pornography, "crap" - and this is the result. Others argue that the reason for this phenomenon lies in scientific and technological progress. They say that before children read a lot simply because they did not have other entertainment, activities. Now almost every family has a computer, now the overwhelming majority of children have mobile phones with a bunch of complex functions, other electronic devices. Reading has simply been supplanted by electronic games; this should be regarded as an annoying, but completely inevitable phenomenon. In the end, once teachers fiercely opposed the introduction of ballpoint pens in school life: they say, because of this, children will not have beautiful handwriting! And a little earlier, their grandparents were indignant: why, instead of goose feathers, they began to write with some kind of metal? Progress cannot be stopped! Still others vehemently deny this: they say, progress has nothing to do with it, and before the kids had something to do. In every district there are free circles for every taste: sports, creative, and chess, but you read! Still others blame the eternally busy parents who have no time to encourage their children to read. Fifths refer to the specifics of the publishing business: nowadays, few people want to get involved with children's literature. After all, you cannot predict whether there will be demand for a book, whether the costs will pay off. Children are too specific an audience. What is interesting to an eight-year-old child will not interest a ten-year-old. And a book that a ten-year-old is delighted with will not attract the attention of a thirteen-year-old. Be that as it may, it is necessary to teach children to read, because this is the best way for their mental and aesthetic development. And this is quite real! You can relate differently to the work of the same J. K. Rowling, but the fact that the series of her Harry Potter novels literally "stirred up" many millions of children, sat them down at the book, tearing them away from computers, is irrefutable.
