The future composer was born in the capital of the USSR on July 17, 1945. His father worked in a jazz orchestra, his mother worked as an artist-designer. Aleksei's ancestors on the mother's side were officers of the tsarist army.

Rybnikov's musical abilities manifested themselves at an early age. Already at the age of eight, he created music for the film "The Baghdad Thief" and several pieces for piano. At the age of 11, Alexei became the author of the ballet Puss in Boots.

In 1962, Alexey graduated from a music school, after which he became a student at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, class of composition. He completed his studies here in 1967, with honors. Rybnikov completed his postgraduate studies two years later.

Since 1964 Rybnikov has been working at GITIS as an accompanist, since 1966 he has been in charge of the musical part of the famous Theater of Drama and Comedy. From 1969 to 1975 Alexey Lvovich taught at the Moscow Conservatory. Since 1969 he is a member of the Union of Composers of the country.

During the 60s and 70s Rybnikov created a number of chamber works for piano, several concertos for violin, string quartet and orchestra. The composer also has works for the orchestra of Russian folk instruments and button accordion, for a symphony orchestra.

In 1965, Alexey Lvovich began to create music for films. In the late 70s, he became a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. For his still unfinished creative biography, Rybnikov wrote music for hundreds of films. The most famous of them: "The Adventures of Pinocchio", "Treasure Island", "About Little Red Riding Hood", "The very same Munchausen."

Rybnikov is the author of the music for the Soviet animated films "That's how absent-minded", "The wolf and the seven kids", "The Feast of Disobedience", "The Black Hen".

The composer continued to work with cinematography in this century. In his asset - music for the military drama "Star" (2002), the documentary "Children from the Abyss" (2000), for the TV series "Savior under the birches" (2006). Rybnikov's compositions are featured in the films The Passenger (2008), The Last Puppet Game (2010).

The fame and love of the public to Rybnikov was brought by the rock operas "Juno and Avos" and "The Star and Death of Joaquin Murieta". With performances in which the composer's music sounded, the Lenkom Theater after 1981 toured more than once outside the country.

In 1999, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater was established in Moscow. In the same year, the composer became the People's Artist of Russia. Rybnikov was awarded the State Prize (2002), in 2006 he was awarded the Order of Friendship, and in 2010 - the Order of Honor.

The composer is married and has two children: his daughter Anna chose the profession of a film director, and his son Dmitry became a musician and composer.
