Ingmar was born in 1918 in the town of Uppsala, near Stockholm, in the family of a pastor. The strict father brought up children according to the old canons, it happened that they were even flogged.
However, it was an enlightened family, and one day Ingmar took possession of a movie projector, which was given to his older brother. He called it a "magic lantern", and with its help he began to shoot his first "masterpieces" - drawn cartoons. He drew figures on washed-out film and projected them onto a screen.
As a teenager, Ingmar got behind the scenes of the theater, and this world bewitched him. When the performance was on, he could not tear himself away from the action - all his consciousness and soul were in this magical world. Therefore, at home, he began to make his own "theater": he made the scenery, put on the lighting, he came up with the performances himself.
In 1937, Ingmar entered Stockholm College, but he was reluctant to study: he spent most of his time in the youth theater. He was threatened with expulsion from college, his parents were outraged, and he left home. And then he dropped out of school for good, getting a job as a property manager in a mobile theater. And a little later he moved to the opera theater as an assistant director.
Film career
At the same time, he began to write plays, but his first experiments were unsuccessful, and some critic even said that he definitely would not be a screenwriter. But in 1940, Bergman's play was staged at the student theater. The play brought him first recognition, and then a good job: he was invited to edit scripts in a film studio.
At the same time, he wrote his scripts, and one of them was used to stage the film "Bullying" - a story about Bergman's school years. He was shown in Scandinavia and in America, and was received very warmly everywhere.
In 1946, Ingmar Bergman was already shooting the film Crisis himself, which turned out to be not very successful. However, in the same year he removes the magnificent film "Rain over our love", and he is recognized as a good director.
In 1947, his film Music in the Dark was nominated for the main nomination at the Cannes Film Festival. The films "Prison" and "Summer Interlude" received acclaim from audiences and critics, and the comedy "Smiles of a Summer Night" wins a prize in Cannes.
The Cannes Film Festival prize also went to Bergman's film "The Seventh Seal" (1957), which was included in the "golden fund" of world cinema. The Maiden Spring (1960) won an Oscar, and Bergman received the second gold statuette for the film Through Dim Glass (1961).
In the 70s, Bergman created several projects that have become world classics of cinema: the psychological drama "Whispers and Screams", which received an Oscar, the mini-series "Scenes from Marriage" and the musical film "The Magic Flute".
Shortly after the release of these films, the director left the country, outraged by the pressure on him by the tax officials.

Personal life
Ingmar Bergman has been married five times and has nine children, two of whom were born out of wedlock.
The first wife - an actress of a traveling theater, gave birth to a daughter Ingmar, but two years later they parted. The second marriage with Ellen Lundstrom broke up due to lack of money and everyday problems, but Bergman had two more children - twins.
Soon, journalist Gun Groot appeared next to Ingmar, but he cheated on her, and his wife did not want to forgive him.
In 1959, the pianist Kaibi Laretei met on his way, they lived together for 7 years, until Ingmar was carried away by the beautiful actress Liv Ullman, for whom he built a house on the island. This marriage also did not last long.
And only the fifth wife remained with him forever - this is Ingrid van Rosen. In 1995 she will go to another world, and Bergman will begin to seek solitude on the island of Foret, in his home. He himself died in 2007, at the age of 89.
