Ascetics in Orthodox Christianity often sought solitude, moving away from worldly life. In other words, they became monks, because even the word "monk" itself is related to the word mono - one.

The life of a monk differs radically from the life of a layman: going to a monastery means giving up any property, the opportunity to start a family, and engage in worldly affairs. The entire existence of a monk from the moment of the tonsure revolves around two activities: obedience and prayer.

That is why the adoption of monasticism precedes a long preparatory period - the period of obedience. The layman spends this period in the monastery, works and prays together with the brethren, and learns to live away from the world. If the novice does not lose his striving for monastic life, he is tonsured.

There are three types of monks' way of life: hostel, hermitage, and wandering. A dormitory is living in a monastery in a joint courtyard, when the brethren work, live and fulfill the prayer rule together.

Hermitage is the complete solitude of a monk, in this case a person separates from the monastery, goes to live in places far from the world, where he bears obedience with almost complete absence of living conditions, food, material wealth.

Wandering is the joint obedience of two or three monks, they live in a separate courtyard, joint labor, independently providing themselves with everything they need.

Each way of life leaves a certain imprint on the peculiarities of the life and existence of monks. However, in all cases, the minister's daily routine is very tense. The time of rest and sleep, according to the monastic charter, does not exceed 6-7 hours: 4-5 hours at night and 1-2 hours during the day. The cornerstone of everyday life is a prayer rule: from private prayer alone to joint prayers in churches.

The brethren spend their free time from prayer in so-called obediences - labors aimed at maintaining the monastery and providing it with everything it needs, because most monasteries are completely self-sufficient.

The living conditions of the monastery differ depending on the location of the monastery and the severity of the charter. In monasteries located near large cities, moments of worldly life, such as mobile communications, the Internet, news of everyday life, flow into the life of monks to a certain extent.
Step 9
In remote monasteries, life is so secluded that even information about events in the country and the world is extremely rare to seep there. It is believed that the more distant the monastery, the stricter the monastery charter, the less the interference of worldly life in the monastic service, the better the monk fulfills his feat of serving people and God.
