Born in the era of mass youth protest movements in Western countries, the punk movement has become a major source of one type of global mass subculture. And from the punks themselves, many famous rock musicians grew up.

The punk subculture originated in the West at the turn of the 60-70s of the last century. Now it is difficult to say what appeared first: the punk movement itself or punk-rock itself. In any case, music is an integral part of this subculture.

Punk movement

The word punk in English has many meanings. But most of them have a purely negative connotation. Scum, scum, pig, rags, dirt, trash - this is an incomplete list of English curses expressed in one short word punk.

Already from the very name of this youth movement it follows that people who have decided to be called that categorically oppose themselves to society. And the black and red flag of the anarchists, chosen by punks as their official symbolism, speaks of their general denial of the state. Only unlike the anarchists, punks were out of politics. They protested against the existing standing with their music, appearance and behavior.

Unlike representatives of other Western hippie subcultures, punks showed their protest often aggressively. Warmed up with alcohol and drugs, they staged street fights, pestered passers-by, did not obey the police.

All this could not but cause alarm in Western society. And they fought against punks, as far as possible in a democratic society. But, as is often the case among youth protest movements, their leaders inevitably mature. And, in place of yesterday's raging protest passions, a completely peaceful substance appears with its own music, external attributes and philosophy. These people still call themselves punks, but in their essence they are only carriers of the punk subculture.

Punk rock

In the early 70s, the punk movement spilled over into the rock scene. Thanks to this, punks were able to express themselves, their interests and aspirations to the whole world.

The British Sex Pistols is generally considered to be the first real punk band. The harsh manner of performance, outrageous lyrics and aggressive behavior on the stage of the musicians of the Sexy Pistols have become a role model for many other punk rock bands.

The seventies of the last century, without exaggeration, can be called the golden age of punk rock. Punk rock bands around the world have sprung up like mushrooms. Their popularity was gaining worldwide proportions.

But talented musicians, of which there were many in punk rock, began to gradually move away from the primitiveness of this style, creating more and more new directions.

However, the punk movement itself gradually died down.
