Baptism is one of the seven Orthodox church sacraments. Most often, baptism is performed in the temple, but if necessary, it can be carried out at home. In the sacrament of baptism, a person is renewed for a new spiritual life.
The time for performing the sacrament of baptism in Orthodox churches depends directly on how many clergy serve in a given parish. For example, in large cathedrals the sacrament can be performed on any day of the week (in such temples there are special baptisms in which the sacrament of baptism is performed every day). In small churches where one or more priests serve, the ordinance of baptism can be performed on a fixed day once a week.
In the first centuries of Christianity, the sacrament of baptism was not performed as often as it is today. Those who wanted to be united with Christ had to first pass a course of catechism, which explained the basic doctrinal and moralistic truths of Christianity. Such a course of publicity could last for several years. Only after this did the catechumen proceed to the sacrament of baptism, which was added to the liturgy. It is worth noting that baptism was performed only on some of the great feasts in the first centuries. For example, at Easter or the Baptism of the Lord.
Currently, the sacrament of baptism is not tied directly to the twelve feasts or the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. Rather, it happens the other way around - on these days the sacrament of baptism is not performed in churches (however, this does not mean that these days cannot be baptized; if absolutely necessary, the sacrament can be performed).
In small parishes, the ordinance of baptism is performed most often on Saturday or Sunday. If one priest serves, then baptism is carried out after the divine liturgy, prayer services and memorial services. That is, around 12 noon. True, a separate day can be chosen for the sacrament of baptism in such parishes, then the sacrament can begin in the morning at around 9 o'clock.
In large cathedrals, there is no need to wait for the end of the divine liturgy (in such churches, the main divine service of Orthodoxy is celebrated every day), therefore the sacrament of baptism can also be performed in the morning in special baptisms.
In any case, for each parish, the date and time of the sacrament is individual, therefore, those who wish to accept this saving sacrament must in advance find out directly in the church about the time of the beginning of holy baptism.
