Childhood and adolescence of the writer

Neil's biography begins in Portsmouth, UK, where he was born into a Jewish family of committed Scientologists on November 10, 1960. The future famous writer graduated from high school in 1977 in West Sussex, where his family moved a little earlier to be closer to the center of Scientology (where Neela's sister works to this day). His father, David, owned a grocery store chain, and his mother was a pharmacist.

The boy read a lot. Among his favorite authors was, of course, Ron Hubbard, the creator of Scientology, but also the Strugatskys, Bulgakov, Tolkien, Carroll, King. After school, Neil refused to pursue higher education, which his parents insisted on, in order to do what he had been striving for from early childhood - journalism.

He got a job as a correspondent for a local publication and worked a lot, preparing materials for various English magazines. But it took several more years before Neil Gaiman achieved his first success in this field. In 1984, two of his works were published at once: a detailed interview with Silverberg and the first story "Featherquest".

Writing career

In 1985, Neil met Alan Moore, a comic book legend, and decided to try his luck at creating graphic novels. At the same time he released two excellent studies: about the Duran Duran band and his famous book "Don't Panic" about Douglas Adams.

The hero of the comics The Sandman is the work of Neil Gaiman. He co-authored the Spawn anthology and has worked extensively with other comic book writers, collaborating with DC Comics. At this time, he managed to interest Terry Pratchett with his irrepressible imagination, and in 1990 the joint novel "Good Omens" was published.

This book was the first, followed by already independently written Gaiman, who decided to leave comics and come to grips with literature, "Back Door", "Stardust". And, finally, in 2001 - the most famous, multi-award-winning amazing fantasy novel "American Gods", where ancient mythology and modern idols worshiped by people are intertwined, making them gods capable of fighting on an equal footing with Odin himself.

In 2017, a multi-part film based on this book was released, and Gaiman himself worked on the script. But even before this adaptation, Neil became a screenwriter for several films and individual episodes in television series. The sequel to The Gods, The Children of Anansi, is coming soon.

Personal life

Neil's first marriage was not very successful, and the writer broke up with his first wife, Mary McGrath. However, Neil does not forget three children from his first marriage.
