German director Uwe Boll is called "the worst of the worst directors" by critics and many who are familiar with his work. The other half of the admirers consider his work to be modern, unusual and even great. Some consider his films to be mediocre, others - to genius.
Biography
Uwe Boll was born in Germany in a small town in the province of North Rhine-Westphalia Wermelskirchen in June 1965. From early childhood, parents often took their child to the cinema. Film screenings grew into a passion for cinema. After being presented with a movie camera at the age of 13, he began to try to shoot short films. I arranged their views, showing them to my friends, grandparents. After leaving school, he enters the directing department of the institute and immediately leaves it. The reason for leaving is disappointment. He believes that the institute does not teach how to properly shoot modern films. Subsequently, he successfully graduated from the University of Cologne. Moreover, he defends his doctoral dissertation on native literature.
Career and failure
Ball begins his career with amateur cinema. He often copies the plots of his future films from famous filmmakers, which, in fact, does not hide. The first serious work of the director can be called the film "Khanzha". This tape, like the two subsequent ones - "The Heart of America" and "The Twilight of Mind", were not highly appreciated by the public and received a low rating from critics. After the first setbacks, the director decided to film one of the computer games, which he gave a lot of free time to.
In 2003, Uwe directed The House of the Dead. This film was significantly different from the tapes that other directors created. It changes the idea of what a modern horror movie should be like. Again, critics rejected Ball's innovation. Another failure did not prevent him from realizing his idea of creating films based on computer games ("Alone in the Dark", "In the Name of the King: The Story of a Dungeon Siege"). The titles of these films are well known to many gamers from their favorite games. But, having looked at them, they remain indifferent to them. It is believed that Ball does not show the plot of the game itself in the movies, but takes only heroes from them.
In 2007, Uwe shoots the comedy "Postal", where he himself plays one of the main roles. Unfortunately, it turned out to be as disastrous as the previous tapes. After a series of failures, he decides to create his own company and calls it Boll KG. He begins to make films based on original scripts (Tunnel Rats 1968, Stoic, Max Schmiling). One of the most popular and significant was the film "Rage".
Uwe Boll's paintings are mostly low-budget, which hardly pay off. According to the director himself, such films cannot make their way onto the big screen of the film market. And he is unable to make high-budget films. Therefore, in 2016, Ball decided to leave the profession, which he himself announced.
Personal life
Uwe Ball is a versatile person. He writes books ("Types of styles and genres", "How to make films in Germany"). Has its own restaurant. He is fond of boxing.
Now Uwe is engaged in production work. Interesting is his YouTube channel, where he often makes caustic jokes about Hollywood directors who never appreciated his work.
Uwe Ball is married. His wife is a charming Canadian actress Natalie Tudge, who is much younger than him. They are raising a child. They live in two countries - Germany and Canada.
