Culture breeds subculture. Each era has its own subcultures. 1970s are punks, 1980s are metalheads, 1990s are grunge. The 2000s were marked by the emergence of the emo subculture.
Music
What the previous subcultures have in common is their musical base. For punk, the icons were The Exploited, the Sex Pistols. Metalists honor Slayer and Black Sabbath. Grunge lovers have formed around Nirvana and Soundgarden. But emo does not have a musical base. There is no music that went into the emo style. Therefore, among the representatives of this subculture, musical preferences can be very different. Gold representatives - HIM, Bring me the horizon, My chemical Romance. From Russian groups - Slot, $ 7000. All these groups are completely different in genres and directions. Emo rap lovers are not uncommon.
Appearance
What sets emo apart from other subcultures is its appearance. The most preferred type of clothing is extremely tight jeans, sneakers (Converse, Vans) and slip-ons, tight T-shirts, a belt with a metal buckle. Their colors are black and pink, often in check patterns using these colors. Often they mimic skateboarding enthusiasts, since the appearance is generally the same. A lot of time is spent on hair. For a guy, these are bangs on the forehead, short hair at the back. Smooth and black hair is considered the benchmark. Girls wear long hairstyles, hair can be dyed either black, pink, or another acid color. And maybe a mixture of colors. Makeup is also a sure-fire marker. Eyeliner, foundation are used not only by girls, but also by young men. Clothes are covered with patches with the symbols of your favorite bands, a messenger bag is hung with badges. Wristbands and bracelets are an essential element of the emo kid's wardrobe.
Position
As for the inner world, emo is an extremely rich subculture. The position of adherents is the imperfection of our world, the absence of true love in it and the desire to accumulate and build oneself in images from fashion magazines. All this emo is opposed to vulnerability, sensuality, depression, praise of death. Since the entire subculture consists of adolescents, all adolescent problems (misunderstanding on the part of friends and parents, failures in personal life) are transferred to the world of emo perception, after which the adolescent becomes isolated in his new world and takes depression too seriously. This is where the stereotype of emo as a suicide comes from.
Be that as it may, this subculture is almost dead at the moment. In the West, emo were massively reborn as indie kids. In Russia, this subculture was popular in the period 2005-2009, after which representatives began to leave it. Nowadays, you almost never meet pronounced emo. Like any subculture, it did not last long and left, as its adherents grew up and lost the need for self-expression by such methods.
