Step 1

The modern Olympic Games began over a century ago, at the end of the 19th century. In 1894, at the Sorbonne University of Paris, thanks to the selfless work of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, it was decided to resume the Olympic Games. Until this year, games were occasionally held in different centuries and in different countries. But from ancient times to the proposal of Pierre de Coubertin, no one made them a real tradition and the property of athletes from many countries.

Step 2

The decision to resume the Olympic Games was greeted with great joy, both at the very first meeting of the Olympic Committee in the Sorbonne, and by the athletes. Active preparations began for the first Olympic Games of our time. And already on April 6, 1896, their opening took place in Athens. This date was the beginning of the new Olympic Games.

Step 3

It is symbolic that it was Athens, the capital of the ancient Olympic Games, that became the first city to host the updated Games. The atmosphere at the first Olympiad was very solemn; at the moment of the opening, girls in antique attire appeared. They showed, as it were, the continuity of the traditions of ancient Greece and the modern world. For the same reason, the marathon was staged along the ancient route from Marathon to Athens.

Step 4

In that first year, athletes from 13 countries took part in the games. At that time, only men competed among themselves. We competed for medals in 43 sports. Since then, the Olympic Games are regularly held once every four years. The break was made only during the world wars.

Step 5

Already in 1924, it was decided to establish the Winter Olympic Games. At first they were held in the same year as the summer ones, but in 1994 they were moved by 2 years. Hosting games has always been a rather costly event for the participating countries and for athletes, so a break of two years was only beneficial to everyone.

Step 6

Now the Olympic Games adhere to the same standards and principles that were established for them by the founder of the International Olympic Committee, Pierre de Coubertin.
