Sysoev Day is celebrated on July 6 according to the old style, in the new style - on July 19. The Monk Sisoy the Great lived in the Egyptian desert in a cave that was consecrated by the prayers of his predecessor, Anthony the Great. Sisoy led a hermit life for sixty years and during this considerable time he was able to achieve spiritual purity and receive the gift of miracles as a reward. This unique gift was so strong and powerful that it allowed one day to bring a deceased youth back to life.
The reverend hermit monk was rather merciful to those around him and to his neighbors, as well as to those who turned to him for help, he received everyone with compassion and love. But at the same time, he still remained extremely strict with himself. Once Sisoy told a pilgrim that the most important thing is to consider oneself below the others, since such humiliation helps to find humility.
When Saint Sisoy lay on his deathbed, the disciples who surrounded the elder suddenly noticed that the face of the Great One began to shine. At the same time, the Monk declared that he saw all the apostles and prophets. The disciples asked who Sisoy was talking to, then he replied that Angels had come for his soul, and he asked them to give a little time to repentance. Then the face of the Reverend shone so that the disciples did not dare to look at him. Before his death, the monk managed to inform his disciples that he saw the Lord God himself, and after these words his holy soul
departed to the Heavenly Kingdom.
It was to this day, which became a memory, that it was supposed to complete all sowing work where they continued. On Sysoev Day, proverbs were recalled that every task should be done in due time: "Not that concern, that there is a lot of work, but that concern, like there is no work" or "Every day has its own concerns." It was also believed that on this holy day, dew is gaining healing properties and gives health and strength to man, bird and beast. In the villages on this day, they also began to cook currant jam.
