Religion and Science. The two most important socio-cultural institutions. Two approaches to the study of the world and the phenomena occurring in it. An eternal confrontation between calculating, rational thinking and all-encompassing love, feelings, faith and spirituality. Despite such different foundations and methods of knowledge, science and religion have a lot in common.
Instructions
Step 1
Religion and science are two kinds of ideas about reality. This is their main similarity. Religion implies the existence of a higher mind, which is a systematized and organized body of knowledge about being. Science is constantly looking for facts and objective knowledge about reality, about the world and its laws, updating and systematizing this information. The goal is the same here and there - cognition, only the approaches are different.
Step 2
Christ, Muhammad, Gautama. Aristotle, Newton, Mendeleev. Whatever the approach, the process of cognition cannot do without personalities. The founders of both have always been people striving for knowledge, cognizing, teaching others. The role of the individual is great both at the origins and throughout the development of science and religion.
Step 3
Religions are based on faith. This is faith in God, in a higher mind, in heaven and hell, in enlightenment and nirvana, in the knowledge given by religious teachers. Science is also faith in its essence. Belief in laws, facts, axioms, a reasonable structure of the world. A person does not drink gasoline - this is reasonable. In geometry, a straight line passes through any two points - this is a fact, a pattern.
Step 4
Science relies on knowledge accumulated over the years, changed in the process of cognition. So they used to think that the sun revolves around the Earth, later they proved the opposite. This has become a fact on the basis of which many theories exist. Religion is also based on knowledge. Bible, Koran, Upanishads, Tripitaka and others. All religions are based on the original texts and knowledge that were given by any teacher. Reliance on knowledge is the most important similarity between religion and science.
Step 5
The original goal of science is to change the world for the better, to facilitate the existence of people on the planet. Caring for a person is what science does. Religion has similar goals. Peace and goodness, spiritual growth and human happiness - this is what religion strives for.
Step 6
In both cases, misinterpretation of texts, misunderstanding or malicious intent lead to irreversible consequences. Nuclear weapons and crusades, environmental disasters and persecution of witches are the result of using knowledge and faith for selfish and evil purposes.
Step 7
Both religion and science have a stable organized system, a hierarchical structure, for example, the church and the RAS. They also have their own norms and traditions and always strive for an objective explanation of their points of view.
Step 8
Among other things, there has recently been a tendency to combine some aspects of science and religion. So many Buddhist teachers do not deny most of the scientific facts, and claim that their religion is largely based on science. And such sciences as philosophy and parapsychology, which is gaining momentum, have a continuous connection with religious postulates and in many ways share them.
