Sergei Polunin is a Russian ballet dancer. The premier of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Musical Theater since 2012 has been a soloist of the Bavarian Ballet, a permanent guest soloist of the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.
The media call Sergei Vladimirovich Polunin a rebel and a "bad guy." The dancer's personal life is often paid close attention. He himself achieved considerable success in one field and began to master a new genre.
The beginning of a choreographic career
The artist's biography began in 1989. The boy was born in Kherson on November 20. From the age of three, the child attended the gymnastics section. His plasticity and excellent ear for music were immediately appreciated by the teachers.
Five years later, his parents transferred his son to a choreographic school. After two months of study, Sergei was named the best student. At first, the dancer did not admire the ballet lessons. On the contrary, in subsequent interviews Polunin admitted that after the first classes he dreamed of being injured in order to leave the school.
The eight-year-old boy was transferred to the Kiev Choreographic School. Together with her son, his mother also left Kherson. The head of the family went to Portugal to work on a contract. The grandmother, who began working as a nurse, also took part in financing the education of her grandson. From the age of thirteen, the young artist won prizes in prestigious competitions.
He became one of the winners of the Serge Lifar International Competition. A year later, Polunin left for London to improve his talent at the Royal Ballet School. The teenager went abroad alone. At the new habitat, Sergei did not have to relax. In 2006 the young dancer became a finalist of the Lausanne Prize international competition.
Both the successes and the perseverance of the artist were appreciated at their true worth. Seventeen-year-old Polunin was included in the ballet troupe of the Royal Coven Garden Ballet.
The path to the pinnacle of success
The task set in childhood was realized, but now the young man decided to become the best dancer. From the age of nineteen he got the leading roles in productions.
The promising artist became the premiere of the famous troupe, the youngest in its entire history of existence. It seemed to the audience that the guy effortlessly soared into the air, as if hovering over the stage outside the laws of gravity. Huge changes in creativity have taken place since 2011. At the next rehearsal, Sergei left the ballroom, refusing to return to the Royal Theater.
On this occasion, a lot was said in the press, but none of the versions was confirmed. The artist admitted that he had long ago decided to leave. In his opinion, the act was not an impulse. It's just that the dancer is tired of the daily routine and the feeling of injustice. There was a silence in creativity and personal life. Sergei closed in on himself. Gangster Anthony Lammin became a new friend.
The love of tattooing united both of them. For an artist, body art is a special kind of art. Therefore, he contributed to the opening of the salon and, together with Anthony, took up a new business.
New facets of talent
Polunin was thinking about ending his choreographic career, but in 2012 he flew to Moscow. The desire to perform at the Bolshoi Theater brought the dancer home. With his perseverance and talent, the young man attracted the attention of the artistic director of the Stanislavsky Theater Igor Zelensky. Polunin became the premiere of the Bolshoi, while performing at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater. After two years, the novelty disappeared, the artist began to swim freely again, becoming a guest star, and not the main dancer.
Sergey agreed to participate in the video for “Take Me to Church”, then in the advertisement for “Dior Homme”. The shooting captivated Polunin so much that the artist moved to Hollywood. A new challenge was the star title of the Dream Factory artist. Debut works distinguished themselves by their scale.
In 2016, Polunin's youth was told in the documentary "Dancer". Small spectators played a special role. Sergei is confident that after popularization, ballet will turn into a more democratic form of art.
In 2017, the artist made his debut in a feature film. For Murder on the Orient Express, the dancer reincarnated as Count Andrei. The aspiring artist admitted that he had absolutely no cinematic experience, so he had to spend a lot of time studying the work of famous colleagues.
Polunin did not give up the ballet completely. Since 2016 he has been a guest soloist at the Bavarian Ballet. The premiere screening of the debut art project took place. At the same time, the premiere of "Project Polunin" took place. The artist acted as a choreographer in it. The first performance took place on March 14, 2017. It consisted of several excerpts from the famous performances "Narcissus and Echo", "Icarus. The night before the flight."
Life off stage
There are many rumors about the private life of the rebel. It is confirmed that the dancer had an affair with his colleague, ballerina Helen Crawford. The couple broke up after the girl recognized her desire to start a family. A year later, the dancer Yulia Stolyarchuk became Polunin's chosen one. Together, young people appeared in public, but there was no official confirmation of a romantic relationship.
In 2015, they met Natalia Osipova. Together with her, Sergei danced in the ballet "Giselle". The main male party was intended for David Holberg, but due to injury he had to refuse to participate. His place was taken by Polunin. The feelings between him and Osipova originated in rehearsals.
The performer plans to shoot a film project about a dancer who can no longer perform. According to the artist's idea, such a psychological state will interest the viewer. The creation of a charitable foundation for helping talented children is also in the future.
Sergei decides to open his own dance school. In 2018, the premiere of the spy thriller Red Sparrow took place. In it Polunin played one of the supporting characters. The dancer says little about his private life.
In 2017, information appeared in the press about the separation of the Osipova-Polunin couple, but there was no official confirmation of this. New joint pictures appear on the artist's social media page.
