Great Expectations is an English miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens, which premiered on 27 December 2011 on BBCone. The series has received numerous prestigious awards, including an Emmy Award.

There is no deception in the world worse than self-deception

The fates of the heroes, so different in their origins, but so similar in their high hopes, are intertwined in a complex plot, full of drama and mysteries.

The main character is Pip, an orphan who lives in a smithy in his sister's house. Despite his mistreatment, he grows up to be a kind child capable of compassion. The case brings him to the escaped convict Abel Megvich, who forces the boy to help him get the file. The child, driven by fear, fulfills the criminal's request, bringing with him a piece of pie for the hungry Megwich. The boy's act touches the convict to the depths of his soul. The fugitive criminal is later captured and returned to prison.

Soon Pete receives an unexpected invitation to the house of the mysterious Miss Havisham, who has lived in seclusion for many years. There he meets Estella, her adopted daughter. “Love her,” the old maid whispers to the boy, who falls in love with a young aristocrat even without instructions.

Miss Havisham awakens great hopes for a bright future in the heart of a naive child, which she then destroys herself, sending him back to the forge and forbidding him to see Estella.

After several years, the lawyer Jaggers, Miss Havisham's executor, appears in Pip's house with the extraordinary news - the young man becomes the heir to a huge fortune. The identity of the benefactor remains a secret and will be revealed only on the hero's day of majority. The guy must immediately leave for London, starting the life of a real gentleman there. With high hopes, Pete goes to meet his fate, unaware of the mysterious and tragic events that await him.

“All our life we have been doing the most cowardly acts with an eye on those whom we don’t put a penny into.”

An unusually atmospheric series, with a wonderfully selected musical accompaniment, scenery and costumes. Special colors, mystical fogs, city streets of London realistically convey the atmosphere of England at the end of the 19th century. Special attention should be paid to the cast, which perfectly conveyed the spirit of the heroes of the work of the same name by Dickens.

The series, full of moral contradictions, implicit oppositions of the characters, their spiritual experiences, makes the viewer think and leaves a pleasant aftertaste after watching.
