A nation is a stable community of people united by linguistic, territorial, and cultural characteristics. This word comes from the Latin term "natio" - "people", "tribe". The definition of "nation" can be attributed both to the citizens of one state and to an ethnic community with a single language and identity. You can often hear the expression “great nation”. What does it mean?

How is the greatness of a nation expressed in general? For some, the very concept of "greatness" is associated with the large territory occupied by the nation, as well as its size. Another cannot imagine greatness without significant achievements in culture, science, technology. The third believes that only that nation can be called great, which won many victories on the battlefield. Etc. To some extent, everyone is right.
If we consider the history of the ancient world, then, without a doubt, the great nations can be considered the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The Egyptians created a highly developed civilization, reached great heights in the exact sciences, especially mathematics and astronomy. The gigantic structures of ancient Egypt have survived to this day - the pyramids, which even now make a simply grandiose impression. It would be very difficult to build them, even using modern technology.
The ancient Greeks made a colossal contribution to science and culture. This people was relatively small in number, but gave the world a huge number of famous scientists, philosophers, writers, architects, sculptors. For this fact alone, the ancient Greeks can rightfully be considered a great nation.
The ancient Romans also became famous by right. Starting from a small area in the lower reaches of the small Tiber River, the Latins gradually conquered all of Italy, and then many neighboring territories. As a result, a powerful and huge Roman Empire arose after several centuries. But the ancient Romans were famous not only for their belligerence. They made a great contribution to various fields of science, culture, introduced the so-called "Roman law", which later became the basis of jurisprudence in many countries. Therefore, they can be called a great nation.
Why the inhabitants of Russia are a great nation
The peoples inhabiting our homeland have repeatedly had to endure severe ordeals. Mongol-Tatar invasion in the XIII century, Time of Troubles (early XVII century), Patriotic War with Napoleon (1812). And in the 20th century, a number of the most difficult adversities fell to their lot: the Civil War after the October coup, the breakdown of the usual way of life, repression during the reign of Stalin, the Great Patriotic War, which led to colossal casualties and destruction. The Russian people withstood all this with honor, did not break down, did not lose their originality and the best human qualities. Therefore, Russians are a great nation.
