John Galliano is a British couturier. He is called a genius of fashion, each of his shows is a real theatrical performance, it was he who turned the defile into mini-performances.
Biography of the couturier
John Galliano was born on November 28, 1960 in Gibraltar. His father is English and his mother is Spanish. In 1966, the family moved to South London, at which time the future infamous fashion designer turned 6 years old. His mother was a housewife and devoted all her time to her family, she taught her son flamenco and dressed up in elaborate outfits for any occasion.
Galliano was educated at the St. Martin College of Art and Design. While still a student, he worked as a costume designer at the British National Theater, where he became interested in the subject of historical costumes and was inspired by the idea of creating a graduation collection based on the French Revolution. His graduation work, Les Incroyables, was a huge success. Galliano soon founded his own label with various sponsors. His collections were dramatic, but for several years they did not generate income for him. The couturier went bankrupt in 1990.
Galliano tried to get back on his feet for several more years and released new collections until he received support from Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of the American edition of Vogue, and André Leon Talley, creative director of Vogue. They introduced him to Portuguese fashion patron Sao Schlumberger, who allowed Galliano to use her mansion to show the Fallen Angels collection, and several top models worked for free. The hugely successful collection was created from one fabric, but it was full of extravagance and luxury. As a result, attention was paid to the couturier. Galliano was named head designer for Givenchy in 1995, becoming the first British fashion designer to head up a French haute couture house. After two years, he moved to work for Christian Dior. An extravagant fashion designer's working methods are unique. Each of his collections is a story with its own heroes (Lucrezia Borgia, Napoleon and Josephine, Rudolf Nureyev, Scarlett O'Hara, Louise Brooks). Galliano loves to experiment with historical outfits and is inspired by style icons - the finest representatives of the era.
Galliano was named the best designer of the year in 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997, and in 2008 he received the distinctive badge of the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his contribution to the development of the fashion industry. Previously, similar awards were awarded to Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld.
In 2011, Galliano made the headlines for inappropriate behavior. British tabloid The Sun posted a video of Galliano making anti-Semitic remarks to Italian tourists in a Parisian bar. He was arrested by the police, and many condemned the designer for the act. His behavior has become a hot topic, and is discussed far beyond the world of fashion. Galliano was fired from the Christian Dior fashion house. Two years after the scandalous incident, the fashion designer returned to work. He was invited to his Fashion House by the American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and created the conditions for the implementation of his extraordinary projects, and in 2015 Galliano headed the Maison Margiela fashion house as creative director.
Personal life
Little is known about the designer's personal life, Galliano tries not to advertise it. It is known that the stylist Alexis Roche has been the "second half" of the couturier for 12 years. Prior to that, Galliano lived with his colleague John Flett, who died in 1991 of a heart attack.
