short biography

Nadezhda Alliluyeva was born in 1901 in the family of a revolutionary. The girl's mother was German, her father, according to some unverified information, was a gypsy. The girl was very beautiful, distinguished by an independent and restless character, but she was always respectful to her elders and fully shared the traditions of the Caucasus.

The girl studied well, but in 1918 the gymnasium was closed. Parents were busy and were rarely at home, Nadezhda had to think about the future herself. She entered the service of V. I. Lenin's secretariat as a typist. However, her career was interrupted by marriage - in the same year, the girl tied her life with Joseph Stalin, an old ally of her father.

Personal life

Biographers argue about the dates of Nadezhda's acquaintance with her future husband. Some believe that they knew each other well for many years, but the leader always treated Nadia as a baby, a friend's daughter. A chance meeting, when the girl was already 16, became the impetus for mutual love. Other historians believe that everything was much less romantic - Stalin, who had been a widow for 10 years, needed a suitable wife and the choice fell on young Nadezhda - a beautiful woman, the daughter of a revolutionary, a real native of the Caucasus, modest and proud. Nadezhda became for Joseph the second and last wife, she herself wrote that he was and remained her only love.

Family and Children

The family life of the Stalin-Alliluyevs could not be considered happy. In the early years, Joseph was attentive to his wife, witty and gentle. But over time, he increasingly moved away from her, the twenty-year age difference and the catastrophic character mismatch also affected. Nadezhda was always distinguished by her isolation, over the years she became less and less calm, she was tormented by bouts of depression, headaches. The woman was very worried about imaginary and real betrayal, the constant absence of her husband, neglect, which he did not consider necessary to hide from strangers. Relatives noted that already in the first years of marriage, she had suicidal thoughts.

Happiness for Nadezhda were her children - son Vasily and daughter Svetlana. In their memoirs, they noted that the mother was always loving, gentle, very attentive. However, the son and daughter were unable to save the crumbling family. Political problems were added to personal problems - in the early 30s, the repression intensified, many of Alliluyeva's friends and relatives were arrested. The situation was aggravated by a nervous breakdown, the tension around Nadezhda was growing. At an evening in honor of the next anniversary of the Revolution, a public quarrel broke out between Stalin and Alliluyeva. The next night, Nadezhda shot herself from her own pistol, a bullet hit her heart.

The death of Alliluyeva is a mystery that will never be solved. There are versions of the murder by order of Stalin, but most historians believe that the husband was involved only in driving him to suicide. After Alliluyeva's death, Stalin did not marry again; a monument of white marble was erected on his wife's grave on his behalf.
