In the Christian tradition, the days of commemoration of the departed are more important. One of them is the ninth day after death, when friends and relatives of the deceased gather to remember him with a kind word.
Instructions
Step 1
Count nine days from and including the person's death. Even if he died late in the evening (before 12 o'clock at night), the memorial ninth day is calculated, including the day of death. For example: a person died on January 2. In this case, the ninth day falls on January 10, and not on the 11th, as would happen with mathematical addition (2 + 9 = 11).
Step 2
On the ninth day, have a modest pie wake. Try to avoid alcohol. In a table conversation, be sure to remember all the good deeds and good deeds of the deceased. Traditionally, it is believed that the soul of the deceased prepares for the afterlife for forty days. The ninth day is the last, when the soul is shown heavenly tabernacles, after which, until the fortieth day, it remains in hell, observing the sufferings of sinners and hoping to avoid this fate. Therefore, every kind word about the deceased will be credited to him.
Step 3
Go to church, light a candle, pray for the peace of the soul of the servant of God (name). Distribute alms and prosphora to the poor (they can be replaced with cookies) with a request to remember the name of the deceased in prayers. After the church, go to the cemetery, leave the alms there too. Many people pour millet and crumbled eggs (for birds) right on the graves, and put small bags with cookies and caramels on the fence.
Step 4
Remove the curtains from mirrors in all rooms except the room of the deceased, if you adhere to this tradition. Please note that in Orthodoxy nothing is said about the fact that after the death of a person the mirrors in the house must be covered, this custom comes from the old Russian belief that in mirrors the soul can get lost and not find a way out.
