In Orthodoxy, there are 10 main commandments, refusal to follow which is considered a sin. There is no single list of prohibited actions, there are only recommendations for repentance. Using them, you can prepare for confession.
The first commandment
The commandment sounds like this: "I am the Lord your God, let you have no other Gods besides Me." Accordingly, godlessness or atheism is considered a sin, because they contradict this statement. They also condemn polytheism, disbelief in the afterlife, lack of fear of the Almighty, laziness in service, anger during prayer, preference for serving everyday problems, turning to magicians and sorcerers, condemning the word of God, belief in talismans, interpretation of dreams, acceptance of other religions as correct.
The second commandment and sins associated with it
The second commandment sounds like this: “Do not make yourself an idol and not any image of what is in the sky above, what is on the earth below and what is in the waters below the earth; do not worship or serve them. Sins associated with these words: worship of earthly vices, passion for material values, gluttony, alcohol consumption. Repentance is demanded by people overcome by pride, cowardice, laziness, despair, despondency, resentment, greed, and the desire for power. The refusal to wear a cross, the absence of icons in the house, incorrect reading of prayers and their insufficient use are also condemned.
The third commandment and sins associated with it
The third commandment sounds like this: "Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain." Sins associated with this statement: blasphemy, condemnation of God for what is happening in the world, ridicule of the clergy, the use of swear words in conversation, disrespect for the cross, conversations and inattention in church during the service, hasty reading of prayers, incorrect pronunciation of sacred texts.
The fourth commandment and the sins associated with it
The following commandment sounds like this: "Remember the Sabbath day, so that you can keep it holy: work six days and do all your deeds in continuation of them, and the seventh day - the day of rest (Saturday), dedicate to the Lord your God." Entertainment on church holidays is prohibited, it is important these days to visit the temple, pray, and not go to places of entertainment. All celebrations must be held according to certain traditions, refusal to follow them is considered sinful. Here you can also confess if you follow the fast incorrectly, if you violate the recommendations of the church on naming issues, work schedule violations and work on off-hours.
The fifth commandment and the sins associated with it
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you feel good and that you live on earth for a long time." These words help build family relationships. Disrespectful attitude towards one's ancestors, disobedience, conflicts with relatives, condemnation of their actions, shame for loved ones are considered sinful. Here you can also talk about sins that are associated with the birth of children. Abortion, contraception is a sin, giving birth to babies at home or not with specialists also requires repentance, unwillingness to baptize a baby or delay in this matter, abandonment of children, unequal attitude towards babies are also considered sinful. Betrayal of others, lying, selfish attitude towards people, abuse of position, poor performance of work are sins.
Sixth commandment
This is the shortest formulation: "Do not kill." It refers specifically to people, while it is important not only not to take the life of others, but also not to think about it. Suicide, abortion, or thoughts of ending your existence require repentance. Cruelty, risk in life, striving for new sensations that are dangerous and can harm a person or others - this is also sinful.
The seventh commandment and the sins associated with it
The words of this commandment look like this: "Do not commit adultery."Cheating, intimacy outside of marriage, experiments in bed, illegitimate pregnancy, child molestation, polygamy, living together without a wedding, shameless dancing and entertainment require a visit to confession. In Orthodoxy, there are a large number of prohibitions on sexual relations, so it is better to clarify with the priest what exactly is condemned and not allowed in a pious family.
The eighth commandment and the sins associated with it
This commandment says about social life: "Do not steal." The appropriation of someone else's property, also thoughts about this, greed, envy and observation of committed sins without condemnation are sinful. Extortion, usury, deliberate refusal to work, seeking profit in every action are condemned by the church. It is important to keep not only your actions honest, but also your thoughts.
The ninth commandment and related violations
The commandment is: "Do not give false testimony against your neighbor." Spells, lies, condemnation and accusations of others in conversations and thoughts, sarcasm and irony, flattery, deceit in words, impatience, idle conversations are a sin. It is important to speak only to the point, weighing each word.
The tenth commandment and reasons for repentance
"Do not covet your neighbor's wife, and do not covet your neighbor's house, nor his field, nor his servant, nor his maidservant … nor all that belongs to your neighbor." This commandment condemns envy in all its manifestations, as well as the desire for more than you have. Daydreaming, striving for material values, indifference to the troubles of others are the reason for confession.
