Before buying a hunting rifle, it is necessary not only to go through a lengthy procedure for obtaining a license to use it, but also to prepare a place for its storage. There are rules for equipping such a place, they are enshrined in law.

Requirements for the place of storage of weapons

The owner of the license to use it has the right to store the gun only at the place of his residence, both registered and temporary. The law states that at the same time its safety should be maximally ensured. Both intruders and family members should not have access to it.

If the weapon is contained in small quantities, then a special cabinet is purchased for it, made like a safe. For mass storage (for collection purposes, security and hunting organizations), in addition, a separate room is equipped. The room should be separated from the rest of the space by massive steel doors embedded in a metal opening and having several locks. When located on the outer floors, grilles are mounted on the windows.

What should be the safe

Many of the models that are presented in shops selling rifle storage cabinets do not comply with legal requirements, as they do not have a suitable design. The order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 288 of 1999 determined the thickness of the walls of the safe in which the weapon can be kept, as well as the material from which it is made.

This is a durable metal (usually steel) or wood, the walls of which are lined with thick iron. Its cross-section should not be less than 2 mm, and if a compartment for cartridges and other ammunition is provided in it, then the minimum wall thickness of the latter is 3 mm. An exception is a transport cabinet, for which the value is reduced to 1.6 mm.

Since it is forbidden to store the gun itself and ammunition for it in one compartment, and the installation of two cabinets with different parameters is inconvenient, the design of the safe usually consists of a complete set of two sections: a large lower one and a small upper one, with more massive walls. Each of them is locked with two locks, and they should not be ordinary door locks, but special safe ones. There are three types of them, installed on cabinets of different price categories. The first is key, the second is code. In terms of reliability, they are about the same, but the key will have to be hidden, and the code will be enough to remember. The third type is biometric, which reads information from the owner's finger.

The closet itself can be built-in - then it is disguised as furniture or a wall panel, or ordinary. In the latter case, due to the elongated structure, it must be attached to the wall by means of two or more bolts. On any day during the daytime, the owner of the weapon can be visited by a police officer to check that the rules for storing it have been observed.
