Preaching is biblical instruction for believers. Reading Scripture on your own often leaves a lot of questions. Preaching helps you understand God's Word and shows you how to apply it in your daily life.
It is necessary
- - the Bible;
- - theological literature.
Instructions
Step 1
Select a passage from the Bible. If you are not too familiar with the Holy Scriptures, opt for well-known and understandable subjects - David and Goliath, Samson and Delilah, the election of Abraham, the Sermon on the Mount, the parable of the sower, etc. Read the selected passage several times.
Step 2
Use interpretations and other specialized literature (reference books, maps, textbooks on the history of the Old or New Testament) and find out the historical background of that time: when this passage was written, what did it mean in the historical context. If you come across terminology or little-known, outdated words in the text that will be incomprehensible to the audience, find out their meaning, find modern equivalents.
Step 3
Read the selected passage in the context of the Scriptures. What preceded and what came after the given words or events. Highlight the main idea. List a few possible topics for the sermon. Another order is possible: first, the topic of the sermon is selected, and then a passage from the Bible is selected.
Step 4
Draw up a sermon plan based on your chosen topic. In the introduction, describe what you plan to talk about, briefly describe the problem. In the main part, state the interpretation of the selected passage (including the historical context). Give real life examples to illustrate the main idea. Quotations of famous believers (St. Augustine, John Chrysostom, Isaac Newton, etc.) on this topic will only strengthen the perception of the sermon. Try in the sermon to touch upon the pressing problems of your flock: material difficulties, conflicts with children, laziness and indifference, quarrels and condemnation, or other specific sins.
Step 5
Underline the main idea in the conclusion. Give a biblical answer to your question or problem. Encourage listeners to take some action (take care of their parents, be honest in everything, spare time for God, etc.). A positive conclusion that encourages the listener to change is the key to good preaching. As you prepare your sermon, pray that God will reveal the spiritual meaning of the passage to you and help convey it to others.
