The American slang word grunge literally means something or someone very untidy, dirty, disgusting. In rock music and later in the fashion industry, grunge has become one of the most recognizable styles.

In the late eighties of the twentieth century, a new definition was needed, under which not quite typical rock music could fall. Several bands, including the Stooges, Green River and even U2, began experimenting with guitar parts, making them more violent in performance and dark in sound. Vocalists added tears to their voices, songwriters turned lyrics into clots of depression. This is how grunge appeared - something impartial, but at the same time not devoid of lyricism. A new trend has arisen in the world of rock music, and a short, but bright life was prepared for it.

The real popularity of grunge brought Nirvana - the cult American group of Kurt Cobain, who later committed suicide (quite in the grunge style). The song Smells Like Teen Spirit, released in 1991 as part of the album Nevermind, became an apologist for alternative rock called grunge, and Kurt Cobain was called "the voice of a generation" by music critics.

The worldwide grunge fan hysteria did not end with the death of Cobain and the gradual disappearance of those few bands that played in this musical style. In the nineties, grunge was reborn into a real youth subculture, the basis of which was a special style of clothing. His ideology was a teenage love of rebellion: the main principle of grunge was the combination of the incongruous.

The first emerging fashion trend was picked up and developed by the style designer was heavy army boots, which looked especially impressive on fragile girls.

Modern grunge aficionados, who are also opponents of glamor, take inspiration from second-hand shops. On the streets, these guys can be identified by their deliberately careless appearance. Long hair without hairstyle and styling, shabby clothes, massive shoes, anarchist or pacifist accessories. Adherents of this subculture believe that appearance in a person is not the main thing, and demonstrate this postulate in all available ways.
