The October Revolution was able to give new life to the art of ballet. The ballet has a new audience - workers, peasants, the Soviet intelligentsia. Ballet has ceased to be an art for the elite. And one of the brightest ballet dancers was Nikolai Ivanovsky. With his work, he contributed to the development of the art of dance. And after the end of his dancing career, he passed on his knowledge to the students of the Mariinsky Theater.
Life and career history
The future outstanding ballet dancer Nikolai Pavlovich Ivanovsky was born on July 21, 1893 in St. Petersburg into a family of creative intelligentsia. He was educated at the St. Petersburg Ballet School and after graduation in 1911 began dancing in the Mariinsky corps de ballet.
Nikolai Ivanovsky improvised a lot in dance and performed solo pantomimes. Participated in the premiere of the play "Dance Season" by Fyodor Lopukhov. In 1930-1931 he temporarily moved to Georgia and served there at the Tbilisi Theater.
There is very little data about his personal life. It is known that he remained unmarried and had no children. It is likely that he devoted his whole life to art and he simply did not have free time to create a family.
This is a typical classical ballet dancer, he made it his own creative highlight. He took part in the first production, entitled "The Greatness of the Universe" by the composer Beethoven. Since 1925 he has been teaching at the Leningrad Choreographic School (ballroom dance class). In 1940-1952 and 1954-1961 he became the artistic director of the St. Petersburg ballet school. In 1946-1961. - Head of the Department of the Dance Faculty of the Leningrad Conservatory (since 1956 he received the deserved title of Professor of Science).

Nikolai Ivanovich in Ivanovo is the founder of the method of teaching the history of the Motherland of dance, which became generally accepted in the ballet school in the Soviet Union, and later in Russia. He made a significant contribution to the development of ballet art from the Soviet Union. He was also involved in the recreation and staging of ancient historical dances of the peoples of the world.
In addition to dancing, he was also engaged in literary creation, wrote the historical book "Ballroom Dance of the 16th - Part of the 19th Century" (published in 1948), as well as many articles on the art of dance, published in newspapers and magazines of that period.
He is one of the first ballet dancers to receive the title of associate professor and then professor. He died at the age of 68 from a heart attack on November 28, 1961 in Leningrad.
