A reader is a book publication that most often serves as a textbook.

Reader

The origin of the term "reader" is connected with its Greek roots: it is composed on the basis of two words, the first of which means "use" or "use", and the second means "to study". It is noteworthy that a single term formed on the basis of these two roots already existed in Ancient Greece, and it was transferred to the Russian language in an almost unchanged form, but many years later. So, in Greece, a grammatical collection, formed in the 4th century AD, was first called anthology, while in Russia the first anthology appeared around 1900.

Today in Russia, the term "reader" most often means a collection of full small texts or excerpts from larger texts, united by some common theme. Often, such fragments are accompanied by comments by the editors of the publication, which explain the special terminology used in the passage, as well as describe the conditions for their creation, provide information about the authors and other information that allows the reader to better understand the meaning of the fragment given in the anthology.

Appointment of a reader

The main area of application of books such as a reader is educational activities. Thus, the texts collected in it are usually used as a supplement to the basic didactic and methodological materials used in the process of teaching schoolchildren or students. This, in turn, allows them to give them a more complete picture of the subject being studied, expand their general horizons, and also consolidate the material studied in the main part of the training course. Most often, anthologies as additional teaching material are used in the senior grades of secondary schools and in higher educational institutions.

The use of reading books is widespread in a wide variety of areas of educational activity, for example, in literature, social studies, linguistics and other fields. At the same time, in the framework of the educational process, other types of educational publications are sometimes used, which are similar in nature to a reader. For example, so-called reading books can act in this capacity. In addition, a similar formation principle is used in the compilation of various reference publications, for example, collections of documents or regulatory legal acts that are widely used in the field of jurisprudence.
