In the Christian tradition, the Bible is considered the main book. It consists of two parts - the Old and New Testaments. In Orthodoxy, the Bible is called Holy Scripture. The New Testament is not one book, but a collection of several historical and moral works of the holy apostles.
The canon of the books of the New Testament includes 27 works, the authorship of which is attributed to the holy apostles. The New Testament begins with four gospels. The holy apostles Mark, Matthew, Luke and John wrote the gospels. These books tell about the earthly life of Jesus Christ, tell about his birth, public service, miracles, death, resurrection and ascension to heaven. Gospel translated means "good news." The books proclaim the general human salvation that Christ accomplished.
The next book of the New Testament is the Acts of the Holy Apostles. The author is the evangelist Luke. This book is historical. It tells the reader about the activities of the apostles, their preaching, miracles, as well as the missionary adventures of the holy apostles.
There are seven conciliar epistles of the apostles to Christians in the canon of the New Testament. Saints James and Jude wrote one epistle each, Peter - two, and John the Theologian is the author of three conciliar epistles. The books provide advice and guidance to Christians about the basic rules of the Christian life.
In addition to the conciliar epistles, there are epistles to individual Christian Churches. The Holy Apostle Paul is credited with 14 works that explain the basic truths of Christian doctrine and ethics. However, in modern science, the authorship of some of the letters of the Apostle Paul can be disputed. For example, it is believed that the letter to the Jews was written by another person.
The final book of the New Testament is the Revelation of John the Divine. This work is the most difficult to understand and interpret. It tells about the end of the world, the appearance of the Antichrist and the second coming of Christ. The author uses a lot of images that are difficult to perceive.
