The drum is one of the oldest musical instruments used by man. It belongs to the drum family. Various types of drums are found among the folk instruments of the absolute majority of peoples, they were widely used in ancient music, and in modern music almost no work can do without drums.

Step 1
The oldest drums were found in Mesopotamia. According to research, the time of their manufacture is approximately 6-8 millennium BC. e. It was then that the first rock paintings known to archaeologists were drawn. This suggests that art developed evenly even among ancient people: music was inseparable from drawing. Also drums were found in Moravia and in the territory of Ancient Egypt (4th millennium BC).
Step 2
The drums were originally used as a ritual or signal instrument. They were used to educate neighboring settlements about the danger. Several drum "posts", located within earshot of each other, could very quickly transmit information. With the help of drumming, the shamans fell into a trance and then predicted the weather or informed the rest of the tribe how the communication with the spirits went. Since ancient times, drums have also been used to raise the spirit of fighting armies with a clear, exciting rhythm. There are cases where the use of drums and the excitement of soldiers in the middle of a battle helped to turn the tide of battle.
Step 3
Also drums have been used since ancient times to beat the rhythm in dance. At first, dance music was, for the most part, ritual, then it became extremely secular. The departure from religious canons and the change in the sphere of use of drums to entertainment in no small measure contributed to making it primarily a musical instrument. But for quite a long time, drums were made using different technologies, they were difficult to use in music, since they all sounded differently.

The drums, despite their ancient age, were improved much later than other instruments that sounded more tender. In fact, this only happened at the beginning of the 20th century, when it was invented to produce drums using the technology of multilayer lamination of wood. This is what allowed the drums to be predictable, and therefore truly musical. Soon after, and in connection with this, the "golden era" of drums begins: the heyday of music in which one of the main parts belongs to the drum kit.

In the mid-1950s, they came up with the idea of using plastic membranes, which increased the durability of the drums and made them easier to tune. Around the same time, electronic drum machines appeared as universal drum kits, but they are not able to surpass humans in expressiveness of performance.
