Georges Sand is the pseudonym of the French writer Amandine Aurora Dupin. Her literary works gained great popularity in the 19th century, conquering the hearts of thousands of readers to this day.
Origin
The real name of the French writer is Amandine Aurora Lucille Dupin. She was born in 1804 in Paris. Her father was Maurice Dupin, a descendant of the Duke of Saxony, and her mother, Antoinette-Sophie-Victoria Delabord, was a woman from a dysfunctional family, a former dancer. Dupin's parents were categorically against such an unequal marriage, but Delabord became pregnant, and the parents had to come to terms with all the circumstances.
Unfortunately, when Aurora was very young, her father died in an accident while on horseback. The girl's grandmother still did not love her daughter-in-law, considering her an unworthy wife and mother, so she took the child to her upbringing. There, Madame Dupin taught her granddaughter ethics, music and literature, and also invited the best mentors in France to educate the child.
Biography
At the age of 14, Aurora entered a Catholic monastery, where she became acquainted with religious traditions. She began to believe in God and even wanted to become a nun, but the older people dissuaded her from this act, because a person can live according to religious rules and in a secular life. When the girl was 17 years old, Madame Dupin began to get sick. Fearing to give her granddaughter to an unworthy mother, she wanted to marry her off, but failed, since few people wanted to get involved with Delabord's daughter. Aurora lost her grandmother in 1821 and returned to the Delabord family, but she had a cold and conflicted relationship with her mother.
A year later, Aurora Dupin met Baron Casimir Dudevant, whom she later married. In this marriage, two children were born. But the romantic nature of Aurora did not feel the return from her husband, dreaming of real, sublime love. The marriage lasted eight years, after which the girl divorced the baron, took the children and went with them to Paris. There she needs to find a way to feed herself and her son and daughter, so she begins to engage in literary creativity.
Writing career
Her first novel, Aimé, made no impression on either newspaper editors or acquaintances. But she does not give up her desire to create, so in 1832 she published her independent novel "Indiana", in which she first uses the creative pseudonym "George Sand". Since this year, Sand has written several novels, short stories and novellas a year, receiving good royalties. In her works, she repeatedly raises the problem of social inequality and unfair treatment of women, for which she receives both criticism and recognition. Her most famous and best-selling novel was Consuelo, published in 1843.
In 1848, the writer took an active part in the February Revolution. All her works of this period are imbued with social problems and politics. Later, she moved away from such complex and contradictory topics, devoting her works to a wider public. In the late 50s, she was engaged in autobiographical work.
Georges Sand suffered from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and from their complications died in 1876. Her body was laid to rest in Nohant, in the Dupin family estate.
