The USSR and America, being hidden political enemies, decided to unite for a joint operation Frantic, aimed at fighting the fascist invaders. This real war fact formed the basis of the series. It shows the US Air Force shuttling from its military bases in Italy and England to Soviet airbases in Mirgorod, Poltava and Piryatin. These flights are the strictest state secrets.
Later, during the Cold War, they preferred to forget about the existence of the operation altogether. The allies found themselves on opposite sides of the barricades. However, at the height of the Second World War, the friendship of the powers was necessary. In the series, as in history, all the forces of the allies are thrown into the fight against Nazi Germany. Soviet and American pilots carry out military missions with honor and courage. For this mission, three new air bases were built in Ukraine, and modern aircraft, perfect for those times, were designed. Airfields where the Americans land are covered by Soviet aviation.
In the film, military life is somewhat embellished. However, this does not spoil the picture. After all, the director sought to show not the harsh realities of the time, but human exploits, sincere feelings, relationships and interweaving of destinies.
At these military sites, everything is organized according to the highest class. Yankees are guys who are used to comfort. They even built dance floors for them - an unthinkable luxury for the war years. Operation Frantic turned out to be a successful project, as the film "Gloomy Sky" tells about.
Love and friendship
Whatever the political background of the operation, it was carried out by ordinary people. The heroes of the drama are young, brave, in love, capable of sincere friendship and real feats, they believe in victory and love life. The story of human relationships, scattered destinies, broken lives is revealed in the series against the backdrop of military events. This is a story about good relations between Soviet and American soldiers. Each character in the film is unhappy in its own way.
At first, the series was titled Furious, Furious, Frenzied. This is how the name of the military operation referred to in the film is translated. In the course of work on the painting, it was called "Gloomy Sky".
There are no wonderful happy endings in this plot. Each hero had his own losses and troubles. Everyone has known bitterness and tragedy. This is war. The director of the film abandoned the usual figurative patterns. For example, the American military here is by no means a brutal set of muscle mass, but a simple brave guy with a vulnerable soul. Sincere people, heroically fulfilling their combat missions and adequately accepting all the hardships of wartime, capable of love and believing in victory - these are the heroes of the picture.
