Who among the Soviet TV viewers did not laugh at the passages of the heroes of the film "Pokrovskie Vorota"? Many phrases from the film, staged based on the work of Leonid Zorin, have long been dismantled into quotes. Playwright, screenwriter and a little poet Zorin always knew how to illuminate those aspects of reality that found a constant response in the minds of grateful readers and viewers.
From the biography of L. Zorin
The future writer, playwright, screenwriter was born in sunny Baku on November 3, 1924. The real name of Leonid is Zaltsman. Lyonya began to compose poetry very early, much to the delight of family members. His first poetic works were published in 1934 and were highly appreciated by Maxim Gorky himself.
Zorin received his education at the Azerbaijan University, from which he left in 1946. Soon Leonid Genrikhovich received a diploma from the Gorky Literary Institute.
Zorin has always been distinguished by broad erudition, subtle psychologism, nostalgic notes imbued with sadness combined with gentle humor. In his works, the playwright was not afraid to draw cultural and historical parallels. He was never afraid of genre diversity either: the author feels confident in different literary forms.
In 1948 Zorin became a Muscovite. Four years later he joined the party. The playwright's son, Andrei Leonidovich, became a literary critic.
Creativity of Leonid Zorin
The first play by L. Zorin, called "Youth", was staged in the capital's Maly Theater in 1949. Since then, he began to release new plays almost every year. Films have been made based on many of Zorin's works. Perhaps the most popular film, on the idea of which Leonid Genrikhovich fruitfully worked on, can be considered "Pokrovskie Vorota".
Problems did not bypass the author either: more than once ready-made productions based on his plays were forbidden to be shown. The play "Guests", where the author denounced social injustice and the power of the bureaucratic apparatus, was subjected to especially sophisticated criticism. Zorin was sharply reprimanded for "one-sided coverage of the reality of Soviet society."
In his work, Leonid Zorin has repeatedly raised questions about honesty and justice. As a party member, he considered these qualities to be the most important for a communist. This topic may well be considered the defining one in the works of the playwright and screenwriter.
Zorin also ponders a lot about the fate of his contemporaries, especially the younger generation. Almost all of the author's works are united by intolerance to evil and violation of moral norms.
A new stage in Zorin's drama was his "Warsaw Melody", staged in 1966. The action here rests on the dialogues and monologues of the characters. In the center is the problem of relations between people who are distinguished by belonging to different cultures. A Polish girl and a Russian guy are forced to face a soulless system that is contrary to human nature.
Talent and subtle literary flair ensured L. Zorin one of the first places in Russian drama. He also gained fame as a literary critic and an excellent translator.
