German Sadulaev is a writer, publicist and politician who became famous thanks to his premiere collection of short stories and novellas “I am a Chechen”. Later, several more works were written, which were greeted with enthusiasm by the public, received prestigious awards and translated into different languages.
Childhood and adolescence: the beginning of a biography
German Sadulaev was born in 1973 in the small village of Shali in Checheno-Ingushetia. The boy's father was a purebred Chechen, and his mother was a Terek Cossack. Later, the family moved to Grozny, where German graduated from high school. While still a student, he began to write essays that were published by a local youth newspaper.
Having received a certificate of secondary education, Sadulayev left for Leningrad, planning to enter the university. At first, he was going to the Faculty of Journalism, but at the last moment he changed his mind and applied for legal.
Path to literature
Herman wrote his first work “One swallow does not make spring yet” in 2001. Publishers showed no interest in the unknown author, so Sadulayev posted the story on the Internet. She interested Ilya Kormiltsev: he promised Herman to publish the manuscript, but only together with other works that would need to be written as quickly as possible.
Sadulayev enthusiastically took up the job in 2006 at the Ultra publishing house. Culture”, a collection with a rather provocative title“I am a Chechen!”Was published. The stories and stories are based on the author's personal experience and describe the events of the civil war in Chechnya. The book was enthusiastically received by critics, translated into several languages, the stories were included in the anthologies of Russian literature published in the UK and the USA.
On the wave of success, Sadulayev wrote a new autobiographical novel "Tablet". The work was liked by the public and critics and was included in the short-list of the Russian Booker Prize. A year later, the writer presented a new novel "AD", recognized as the best book of the month by GQ magazine.
Today Sadulayev lives in St. Petersburg, successfully collaborates with the magazines Ogonyok, Zvezda, Druzhba Narodov, and is a regular contributor to the independent publishing house AD Marginem.
Political activity
Since 2010, Sadulayev has been actively involved in politics. He became a member of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, in 2016 he ran for the Duma, but in his section he took only sixth place. The loss did not discourage Sadulayev, in the future he plans to try again. In the meantime, the public figure is organizing rallies and other events. The writer is confident that the future of Russia is in socialism and cites the success of modern China as an example. According to Sadulayev, the experience of the eastern neighbors can be successfully implemented in our country, and over time, the ideas of socialism will return to Europe.
Almost nothing is known about Sadulayev's personal life. The writer does not like publicity outside of creativity and politics and does not open up with journalists. It is known for sure that Herman is not officially married and has no children.
