It is quite difficult for a person who grew up in a non-religious family to begin prayer. In the Catholic tradition, there are even special prayer workshops for beginners. But even in Orthodoxy, you can find recommendations on how exactly to start this unusual business. In any case, the most important thing is to join God.
It is necessary
- - a prayer book,
- - a quiet secluded place.
Instructions
Step 1
In the orthodox tradition, it is believed that it is very important to use a prayer book. If you have never prayed, it is recommended that you start by purchasing this book. The Prayer Book is a collection of the main prayers written at different times, ranging from the most ancient ones, which use the words of the Lord Jesus Christ himself, to the medieval ones, created by the great prayer books. It is believed that there is great power in their prayers, and if you say them with hearty diligence, then you will certainly feel inspired. But if you say the prayers that you compose yourself, their effect may be much smaller, you will not experience the necessary spiritual uplift and mood. Nevertheless, for modern people it may well be easier to have a sincere conversation with God than reading a prayer book.
Step 2
To start practicing prayer, set aside a specific time for prayer in your schedule. Prayer is a meeting with God. After all, you make appointments with other people and colleagues? Likewise, care must be taken to meet God in time. Make this meeting a priority. To do this, select a time in advance for which you do not plan anything else.
Step 3
Just start praying. Don't wait for the right mood or the best time of day. Sometimes the appetite is known to come with eating. Once you start, the right mood will appear by itself. When you start practicing prayer, you will notice that sometimes some external forces appear that interfere with you, try to tear you away from this activity. Sometimes you will think that you are too tired to pray, that you are emotionally squeezed out. Realize in advance that these are traps. Prayer promises such an emotional uplift that you will feel refreshed afterwards. It does not take away strength, like many everyday affairs, but gives it.
Step 4
Don't strive for great results right away. To start praying from the heart, you need to feel God, get to know him better. Take your time, start small. At first, the process will seem strange and unfamiliar, but there is no need to be afraid of it.
Step 5
Ask God to exercise his will and be specific in your prayers. The fact is that God cannot help you or intervene in your life, bringing a positive influence into it, until you ask for it more or less explicitly. Otherwise it would mean control and destroy your freedom.
Step 6
Try to reflect on how God feels about certain things you do. Sometimes remorse is the result. It is not needed to make you feel guilty and feel like a sinner. You need to ask God for forgiveness, feel it, then after prayer you will feel inner joy. Prayer should make you happier.
