Many completely ordinary things have an interesting history. For example, the well-known Chupa Chups lollipop, which can be seen in the checkout area of almost all stores, owes its logo to one of the most famous and controversial artists of the 20th century.
Chupa Chups story
The most famous lollipop in the world was invented in Spain in the middle of the last century. The company "Granja Asturias", the main activity of which was the production of apple jam, in 1958 passed into the possession of a young man, Enric Bernat. However, the production is morally outdated, since it was founded by his grandfather. At about the same time as the decision to modernize production at a confectionery factory, the young man had the idea of creating a universal candy for children and adults.
There is a legend that the idea to plant sweetness on a stick came to Enric Bernat's mind after he saw a crying child and a woman scolding him for his clothes and hands soiled with melted sweets. This invention, named by its creator Chups (from the Spanish chupar - "to suck"), conquered first Spain and then the whole of Europe and very quickly moved overseas.
It is strange that such a simple solution to the "sticky" problem was born so late, because, for example, the history of sugar cockerels on sticks that were sold at Russian fairs goes back more than 500 years.
Perhaps the genius of the solution lies in the fact that for the first time on a truly industrial scale, lollipops with different tastes began to be produced.
Chupa Chups logo
After the Chups sweets became popular all over the world, the moment came when sweets needed their own logo, which would be recognized everywhere. Initially, the lollipop was wrapped in a colored wrapper with an inscription on the side. Fortunately, the owner of the confectionery factory, Enric Bernat, knew his famous fellow countryman, the artist Salvador Dali, to whom he asked to come up with something catchy and memorable for his sweets.
The renowned surrealist quickly sketched an eight-petal chamomile with an inscription inside, by this time the candy was called Chupa Chups. Salvador Dali recommended placing the flower not on the side of the candy, but on top.
In Salvador Dali's original draft, Chupa was in all caps and Chups in italic capitals.
The Chupa Chups logo is known to children and their parents in almost all countries of the world, since its creation in 1969, it has undergone only minor changes regarding the letters, the shade of the main background and the contour of the chamomile.
