Research Center Economist Intelligence Unit has published its statistics on the dirtiest capitals in Europe. Cities were assessed according to several parameters: quality of air and water, quality of waste disposal, level of energy consumption and quality of transport.
As a result, Kiev was recognized as the dirtiest European city. Twenty years ago, the capital of Ukraine was considered one of the cleanest, and now Copenhagen has taken this place. Nowadays, the mother of Russian cities is at the very bottom of the list of clean capitals. Experts say that the situation has deteriorated for two reasons. First of all, this is a high level of exhaust gases that arose due to congestion of the streets with cars that are fueled with low-quality gasoline. Secondly, this is tap water of extremely low quality, which no one would even think of as drinking water.
Waste disposal in Kiev is practically not provided. While in Europe most of the garbage is recycled, 80% of the waste in the Ukrainian capital is simply rotting in landfills.
Pollutes the city and large-scale production. Most of the factories operate on outdated equipment and, moreover, are located within the city limits, in contrast to European cities, in which the industry has long been evicted far beyond the outskirts. The most distinguished enterprises, according to the State Department of Environmental Protection, are Kievvodokanal, Ecostandard and Kyivenergo.
In Soviet times, the green part of Kiev was considered the largest in Europe. One resident of the city had 30 square meters. meters of green space. Now this figure has dropped to 16, which also contributes to an increase in pollution. However, the authorities continue to allocate forest plots for development.
Environmentalists see a way out of the situation in a more rational use of available natural resources, as well as the popularization of motor vehicles, which consume less fuel and emit less exhaust gases in comparison with a conventional car.
Sofia and Bucharest are located next to Kiev, which ranked 30th in the list of the dirtiest capitals in Europe. These cities were ranked 28th and 29th, respectively.
