Sport is not only an object of universal attention and interest, but is also an important factor in educating the younger generation, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and strengthening international cooperation. Being in the very center of sports battles, journalists are actively involved in the process of establishing friendly relations between different states.
The Day of the Sports Journalist was officially approved in 1995, its date was July 2 - the day of the formation of the International Association of Sports Press (AIPS). This organization began its existence back in 1924. It currently unites over a hundred national sports unions.
Today AIPS acts as a global mediator between the media, athletes and sponsoring organizations, regularly organizing various seminars for aspiring sports journalists. Of the 30,000 sports reporters and columnists working around the world, about one third are officially registered with the International Sports Press Association.
Our country has its own organization of sports media representatives - the Federation of Sports Journalists of Russia. It was founded in 1990. The federation includes sports reporters from 80 regions of the country. The main tasks of the organization are the development of sports journalism, the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, an increase in public interest in physical culture and sports, the support of veterans and honored workers of sports journalism.
Every year on July 2, the International Sports Press Association and national organizations of sports journalists traditionally hold ceremonial meetings. On this day, the governments of many states award honored representatives of the media in the field of physical culture and sports.
In Russia on this day it is customary to honor the best sports reporters and observers of newspapers, magazines, television channels, news agencies and radio stations. Many newsrooms hold special sporting events on July 2, where journalists can showcase their own sporting achievements.
