Biography

Mary Jane was born in 1863 in the Irish town of Limerick. When the girl was still young, the whole family moved to Wales.

Her father (John Kelly) worked in Carnarvashire at a metallurgical plant. The family had many children, Mary had seven siblings and a sister.

Kelly has grown to be a very attractive girl.

In 1879, she married a simple guy, a miner named Davis. Unfortunately, a few years later, Mary's husband was killed in a mine explosion.

Widowed, Mary Jane moved to London in 1884 and took a job in a brothel in the West End. According to one version, Mary was attracted by a wealthy client who invited her to go with him to France. The girl agreed, but did not live there for long and soon returned back to England.

It is worth noting that many facts in the biography of Mary Jane are rather contradictory. Most of the information about her life is known from the words of Joseph Barnet, the man with whom Kelly lived shortly before her death.

Gloomy Mary

Mary lived very poorly and was very indiscriminate in love affairs. From time to time she drank and, being drunk, often cursed and insulted others. It was for her violent behavior after using "intoxicating" that she was given the nickname "gloomy Mary".

Mary's personal life was very stormy. At various times, she cohabited, first with a man named Morganstone in the Stepney area, and later with a plasterer named Joe Flemming.

Joseph Barnett met Mary in the spring of 1887. In just a couple of days, they already began to live together.

At first, Joseph worked as a loader at the Billingsgate Fish Market, but after he was fired, Kelly returned to prostitution.

After another quarrel, literally a week before the murder, Kelly and Barnet broke up. Joseph moved out from the girl, but from time to time he visited her in the hope of renewing the relationship.

The last time he was with Kelly on November 8 at about eight o'clock in the evening. Mary was in the company of her friend Maria Harvey.

After talking with the girls, Barnett returned to his room, where he played cards with his friends all evening, after which he went to bed.

Murder

On November 9, 1888, Thomas Bower collected rent from apartments. He knocked persistently on Kelly's door, as she was several weeks behind in payment, but there was no response. Bower looked out the window and saw the girl's disfigured body lying on the bed. The frightened man immediately called the police.

After examining the doctors, it was found that death occurred at about two or three o'clock in the morning.

The body was in a terrible state. The victim's stomach was ripped open and internal organs were cut out, his chest was cut off and his entire face was excised. She was literally shredded. The floor, bed and part of the wall were just covered in blood. According to the doctor who examined the deceased, the body was mocked after death. The girl's throat was first cut, and then they began to mock the corpse.

Mary Jane was buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery on November 19, 1888.

The city was agitated to learn of such a brutal murder. The police conducted a series of interviews and searches and, as a result, released a report that linked Kelly's murder to four previous murders of prostitutes.

Despite the existing suspects, the police have not been able to find the real culprit. These girls went down in history as victims of the famous maniac called Jack the Ripper.
