Lyudmila Evgenievna Ulitskaya was born on January 21, 1943. The place of her birth was the village of Davlekanovo in the Urals. Lyudmila was born into a family of evacuated Muscovites. Her father was a doctor of technical sciences, he became the author of works on mechanics and agriculture. Mom once worked at the Research Institute of Pediatrics.
At the end of the war, the family returned to the capital. Here Ulitskaya graduated from high school and became a student at Moscow State University, choosing the Faculty of Biology. Biology classes taught Lyudmila to observe, compare facts and draw conclusions.
After receiving higher education in 1968, Ulitskaya worked for two years at the Institute of General Genetics. Then she was caught in the reprint of prohibited publications. Lyudmila had to leave work.
In search of a place to earn money, Lyudmila met people who worked in the Jewish theater. She was offered a job on writing essays, children's plays, dramatizations, reviews. Lyudmila worked at the theater for about three years. It was during this period that she was seriously carried away by literary creativity.
Creativity of Lyudmila Ulitskaya
Ulitskaya published her first book when the writer was already over fifty years old. Lyudmila Evgenievna wrote poetry before, but did not publish her works as a separate collection. The collection Poor Relatives was published in 1993.
Ulitskaya realized her best creative ideas in 1997: her novel Medea and Her Children won the Booker Prize and became widely known.
Films were shot based on Ulitskaya's scripts in the early 90s. In those same years, the "New World" magazine published the story "Sonechka", which became the best translated book in France.
In 2006, Ulitskaya's novel Daniel Stein, Translator was released. For this creative work, the writer received the Big Book award in 2009.
In addition to writing books, Lyudmila Evgenievna is also engaged in charitable activities. In 2007, the Lyudmila Ulitskaya Foundation was organized. She helps libraries and runs a children's book project.
Ulitskaya believes that she would hardly have been able to become a writer if she had not been fired from her job at one time. She wrote her best works for a narrow circle of people, but over time, her books won a wide audience.
By now, Ulitskaya is considered one of the most successful authors in Russia. She is known and loved outside the country. Lyudmila Evgenievna's works have been translated into three dozen languages.
Lyudmila Ulitskaya got married three times. The first marriage was short-lived. In the second marriage, which lasted about ten years, Lyudmila Evgenievna had two sons. One of Lyudmila's sons became an entrepreneur. Another is engaged in music: he is carried away by jazz. The third husband of the writer was the artist and sculptor Andrei Krasulin.
