The cult Spanish duo "Baccara" made the whole world dance boogie-woogie. Maria Mendiola and Maite Mateos gave their group the name of a rose variety. The beautiful flower also served as a logo.
Maria and Mayte decided to sing, as they were sure that they would not dance all their lives. And the girls seemed to prove the name of the duet: there are no roses without thorns.
Birth
The history of the group began with the acquaintance of Maite Mateos and Maria Mendiola in 1977. The girls quickly found a common language.
They decided to create a group, naming it at the suggestion of Maria "Baccara". The vocalists made their debut in a nightclub. Then there was flamenco and hits at the Tres Islas Hotel in Fuerteventura.
The management of the record company invited talented and bright girlfriends to Hamburg. Rolf Soya became the producer of the artists. The debutants presented the single "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" to the public. It took 7th position in the ranking of the best-selling songs. Group "Baccarat" loudly declared itself to the whole world.
Success
There was a video, an album called "Baccara" was released. It went platinum twice. In 1978 the duo represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Parlez-Vous Français?" The performers who took 7th place recorded the collection "Light My Fire".
The next hit "The Devil Sent You To Laredo" appeared in 1979. It was in the top ten on the charts in Germany. The successful single was included in the next compilation "Colors". The duo performed a lot and enjoyed special attention from the press.
Composition "Sleepy Time Boy / Candido" in 1980 broke with the producer. The new collection of 1981 was also unsuccessful. The artists came to a decision to terminate their cooperation. Each ex-participant went its own way.
New projects
Maite Mateos continued to work with Rolf Soya. However, they failed to revive a successful duo. After changing two dozen participants, Maite decided on a solo career. In the late nineties, the singer took part in the "Baccara-2000" project.
In 2004, Maite participated in the Melodifestivalen-2004 competition held in Sweden with the song “Soy tu Venus por esta noche”. Together with Cristina Sevilla, she released a new disc. With Paloma Blanco, the singer presented the compilation Satin … In Black & White in 2008.
In the eighties, Maria Mendiola founded the New Baccara group. Together with Marissa Perez she sang dance hits, but the singers failed to repeat the success of Baccarat. Marissa was replaced by Cristina Sevilla, ex-participant of the Baccarat 2000 project. For some time she was replaced on stage by Maria's niece Laura. Together with Mendiola, the second soloist sang songs from the New Baccara brand.
The group gives concerts, takes part in television programs. Maria took place personally. A happy wife and mother became a grandmother three times, loves to travel and does not stop dancing. Mateos teaches the art of choreography.
