The popular saying that one meets by dress did not arise by chance. In the old days, a lot could be determined by a costume - a country, a province, a county, and even a village. In addition, the presence or absence of certain items of clothing indicated the age and social status of a person. Ukrainian children's costume is very similar to an adult one, but still has some differences.

Vyshyvanka

Perhaps the most characteristic feature of the Ukrainian costume, both for children and adults, is an embroidered shirt. Both boys and girls wore embroidered shirts. Such a shirt is sewn from rectangular details of the front, back and sleeves. The shirt is richly decorated with embroidery. True, children's embroidered shirts look somewhat more modest than adults, but still they are embroidered on the shelf and sleeves. As a rule, embroidery is done separately and then sewn onto the shirt. For a children's carnival costume, you can replace the embroidery with a wide braid suitable for the style. An adult women's or girl's shirt is made with a gusset. When making Ukrainian clothes for a girl, you can do without this detail. A corset made of dense fabric is put on the shirt. You can sew it, for example, from velvet.

Modern Ukrainian children's shirts are not always sewn according to old patterns. For a girl, it may just be an embroidered blouse made of thin natural fabric.

Skirt and apron

In the old days, Ukrainian girls, girls and women wore ponev. Now, in a children's suit, it will be superbly replaced by a straight skirt made of dense fabric, best of all in a large cage. A skirt for a girl should be knee-length or slightly higher. A white apron with beautiful embroidery is put on over the poneva. Girls (and boys) wore boots with small heels on their feet. Boots were most often red, up to mid-calf.

Details of the Ukrainian costume were most often embroidered with a cross. In some regions, the most popular type of embroidery was satin stitch.

Headdress

The most characteristic detail of the girlish Ukrainian folk costume is the headdress. This is a luxurious half wreath with ribbons. Marriage girls made lush wreaths that resemble a crown. The little girl's headdress was usually more modest. To make a half-wreath, you need a narrow elastic band, artificial flowers with wire stems (or fabric flowers without stems at all), satin ribbons. Cut the ribbons into identical pieces 30-50 cm long. Cut the cut on one side with a “fork” or corner. Sew the elastic into the ring. Attach flowers. Sew the ribbons with the satin side up, bending their straight short edges.

Boy costume

The Ukrainian boy wore an embroidered shirt, wide trousers, and a wide belt. The embroidery pattern was more modest than that of a girl's costume. As a rule, a men's shirt was decorated with decorative seams along the neckline and cuffs. Trousers were usually sewn from blue fabric. The belt can be made of silk, it should be such that it wraps around the waist several times. A headdress is not required for a boy.
