Step 1
Find out the number of the part in which at least a small period of time the person you need served, the date of his death.
Step 2
If your family has saved the letters, try to determine the number of the field mail, by which you can find out the name of the unit (for this you can use the "Directory of field postal stations of the Red Army in 1941-1945").
Step 3
You can try to search for information about the person you need on the Internet. A small number of databases are available online that search by last name. For example, https://poiskludei.mirtesen.ru. This service is paid, so carefully read the payment terms at the bottom of the site.
Step 4
Check out the so-called Books of Memory (they are in most regions and contain information about the dead or missing residents of a particular area). If you have not been able to study the books you need, go to the military forum https://forum.9maya.ru with a request to check the book you need.
Step 5
Write to the editorial office of the Zvezda TV channel, which is conducting the program “We are looking for the missing soldiers”. The website of the program is https://zvezdanews.ru, telephone (495) 645-92-89.
Step 6
Submit your request to the archive, indicating all the information you have. There are several possible answers here: a message about the death (the place, date and death, unit number, rank, burial place are indicated); message about the missing person (the part number, place and date of the loss are indicated); missing person report with incomplete information; message about the lack of information.
Step 7
If the answer from the archive is negative, then continue searching at the military registration and enlistment office at the place of call. There you must leave a statement with all known information. If you managed to find out the part number, then further your searches will continue in the archive. If you're lucky, you'll find information about the person you've been looking for.
