The day of August 5 in the national calendar is called Trofim Insomnia. Associate such a name with two meanings. The first part of the name - Trofim - originates from the church chronicle of the lives of the holy martyrs, and the second part - from folk signs, prescribing on this day intensive work in the field until late at night.
In the Orthodox calendar, August 5 is the day of remembrance of the holy martyrs Trofim, Theophilus and 13 more preachers. They died during the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian (who ruled 284-305). On this day (according to the old church calendar - July 23), Trofim, Theophilus and 13 other people who refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods and preached Christianity were brought to trial. They were cruelly tortured, their bodies were tormented with sharp iron, they beat the martyrs with stones, broke their legs and threw them into the fire. The holy martyrs, strengthened by faith, came out of the fire without a single injury. Desperate to break their will, the bloody emperor ordered the executioners to deprive Christians of their lives by beheading them. The punishment was immediately executed.
According to the popular calendar, on August 5, intensive work in the field began in Russia. In the summer, while the harvest was ripe, the workers rested. Now sleepless days were coming, with which many sayings and sayings are associated: "The day is too small for a good owner", "If work is going on, you don't want to sleep", "August prepares pickles for the winter table", "What you collect in August, with that winter and you will carry it ". So it turned out that after working until midnight, it was difficult to fall asleep from worry about the harvest. With the early dawn, the farmers got up and went back to work in the field. Such sleepless nights were throughout August, for which it received its popular name - insomnia.
In addition, from this day on, it has already been recommended to pick wild berries, go for raspberries and viburnum. In this regard, in August, one could often hear the saying: “On Trofim - raspberry-Kalinniki. The barks from the raspberry are not great, but the berries are sweet. And you will pick a lyk from the Kalinnik, but you will not take the berries in your mouth."
