Starting conditions

The Olympic Games are considered the most prestigious competition for athletes. Sambo wrestling, which originated in Russia, is still not included in the number of Olympic sports. Back in 1981, the International Olympic Committee recognized SAMBO as an Olympic sport. However, this type of wrestling has not yet been included in the game program. World champion and honored master of sports Sergei Viktorovich Ryabov did not know about these features when he started wrestling. The understanding of all the sports and organizational subtleties came later.

The future world champion in sambo wrestling was born on September 23, 1988 in an ordinary city family. Parents lived in the famous city of Tambov. My father worked on the railroad. Mother worked in a garment factory. Sergei was prepared from an early age for an independent life. He always put things in order in his room on his own. I tried to help my mother with household chores. He began to play sports in the elementary grades. A new physical education teacher came to the school and organized a judo wrestling section. All the boys in the class enrolled in this section.

Sports achievements and awards

At first, Sergei felt constrained in training. The coach purposefully set a high pace for the warm-up. Then the athletes went on to strength exercises, and only at the third stage did the struggle begin. Some guys left the section. Ryabov had a similar thought. But gradually he got involved and began to understand the meaning of the techniques. In parallel with judo lessons, the coach began to show the techniques of Russian sambo wrestling. On the surface, the differences were small but important. In Japanese wrestling, strangulation is allowed, but not in Russian. The Japanese wrestle barefoot, while the Russians wear special shoes.

Already in the training process, Sergei began to stand out from the group. In the first tournament for the city championship, he won a quick and spectacular victory. The talented wrestler was noticed by coaches from the capital and invited him to the Moscow club "Sambo-70". Sergey's sports career developed gradually. In 2011, he won a bronze medal at the Russian Sambo Championship. Two years later he took the first step of the podium. Then he "snatched" a silver medal at the World Championships. At the 2019 championship, Ryabov took gold in the up to 90 kg weight category.
