Weddings in Russia were celebrated magnificently, on a grand scale. Wedding celebrations were preceded by matchmaking. The tradition was born a long time ago, the purpose of matchmaking is to conclude property agreements that will form the basis of a new family. This custom was followed by all estates, from peasants to princes.

Step 1
The matchmaker was sent to the bride's house for preliminary conspiracy. If the bride's parents agreed, the matchmaker expressed a desire to look at the girl. The bride's show began. A mother or a relative (caretaker) from the groom's side came to watch her.

They took out the bride, dressed in the best outfits, but with her face covered with a veil. Apparently, this is where the expression “show the product with your face” came from. The woman (the looking) started a conversation with her, in the process of talking trying to find out if she was tongue-tied, how smart and kind.
Step 3
They gave the beholder a drink of honey. The honey, drunk to the bottom, meant that the bride liked it. Having slightly sipped the drink, the drink is returned - there will be no wedding. If the bride liked the bride, matchmaking followed.
Step 4
The matchmakers went to the bride's house, in their role were the godparents of the groom or close relatives - the elder brother, uncle and a professional matchmaker. The bride's parents were given gifts (beer, pies, wine).
Step 5
Arriving at the girl's parental home, the matchmakers allegorically expressed the guy's desire to marry the girl. They praised him in every possible way, extolled his dignity.
Step 6
The hosts thanked the guests for their honor and invited them to the table. Accepting the groom's offer, the bride's parents cut the bread brought by the groom's side. Otherwise, the bread was returned whole.
Step 7
The girl demonstrated what kind of hostess she was, showed her handicrafts - embroidery, woven items. She served snacks on the table, while changing clothes several times.
Step 8
They discussed issues related to the property of a young family, preparation for the next ceremony - engagement, in case of a successful agreement. At a joint meal, the parties negotiate the girl's dowry.
